User category description edit

This should include something at the top that adds a description like "Media uploaded by User:Example". Richard001 (talk) 22:19, 14 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I agree, there should be a default text/banner on such categories. Rehman 06:16, 9 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Why hidden??? edit

What is the justification to make all these categories hidden? Apart from making it harder for me / other users to manage their own files conveniently, it also deemphasises the work that busy uploaders / photographers do, and makes it harder for others to browse our work easily. I also see no downsides to having such a category on a file - after all, it's not like there will be dozens such cats on a specific file! Please remove the hidden attribute or make it optional. Ingolfson (talk) 06:06, 4 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Source categories should be hidden. You can make hidden categories visible by adjusting your preferences. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 16:26, 11 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
I totally agree with Ingolfson, and have raised the same question at Commons talk:User-specific galleries, templates and categories policy#Hidden user categories. OK? Please leave any comments there. /Dcastor (talk) 22:24, 11 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
No consensus has yet been shown that user cats should be hidden. Once again I request for this to be changed. The discussion linked above shows that some users favor the hidden status, while some don't. /Dcastor (talk) 15:32, 7 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Editprotected edit

editprotected Copyedit: "The main purpose is to categorize and add __HIDDENCAT__ in one step. It also allows categorization bots to easily ignore user categories. User galleries should not use this as they go in Category:User galleries." :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 08:48, 14 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Please add
to the template. --  Docu  at 20:05, 27 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Question Why? Does this make any sense? --Martin H. (talk) 13:14, 22 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
See Category:User categories (flat list). It allows to identify user categories. Don't worry about it if you don't want to use it or if it doesn't make any sense to you. --  Docu  at 10:49, 24 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Then it is redundant to Category:User categories. --Martin H. (talk) 11:00, 24 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
No, but Category:User categories might be redundant. --  Docu  at 11:13, 24 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Presumably Category:User categories is supposed to be hierarchical for a user's subcategories. On the subcategories you'd use the "cat" argument of the template to set the parent category. --ghouston (talk) 03:50, 1 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Userbox? edit

EditprotectedIt doesn't seem to be a userbox. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 17:50, 21 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

flat list sorting edit

Editprotected The template isn't passing the sort parameter to the flat list category. I think it should be changed to:

__HIDDENCAT__ <includeonly></includeonly><noinclude> Documentation </noinclude>

Done Thank you. --Indeedous (talk) 21:11, 9 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Editprotected

Sorry, this seems to have done more harm than good, I think because I missed a couple of braces. Try this (untested again, of course): --ghouston (talk) 10:43, 10 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

__HIDDENCAT__ <includeonly></includeonly><noinclude> Documentation </noinclude>

  Done -- Rillke(q?) 19:36, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Null edit request edit

New
<includeonly>__HIDDENCAT__ </includeonly><noinclude>Documentation</noinclude>

Same idea as on Video user category, this template showed or shows up in meta category:User categories. One bad example inspired users to add their subpages to this Metacat. –Be..anyone (talk) 21:17, 4 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Parameter 1 edit

Can somebody help me with the first parameter? It is marked as defaulting to PAGENAME, but mandatory. So what? What values are expected or is this the user's choice? It is not me that needs an answer, but the documentation does. regards --Herzi Pinki (talk) 13:54, 8 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

A new discussion at Village Pump edit

See the discussion at Commons:Village_pump#.22User.22_categories. We need a consensus on how user categories are derived (with or without the "User:" prefix) and whether they need to be hidden. Please comment there. Jee 02:24, 20 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
