Hello, Bill william compton!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Category:Rhythmic_gymnasts_from_Welsh

Category discussion notification Category:Rhythmic_gymnasts_from_Welsh has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.
In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hi can you upload a free image of Chiranjeevi. The present image doesn't look good.--Vensatry (talk) 07:19, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

Although a face of Chiranjeevi is not in front of the camera, but the quality is better than one on article. Bill william comptonTalk 15:31, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

Signatures in India

Do you happen to know if signatures are concidered free in India? Category:Signatures of people from India. There are a bunch of files on en-wiki also (some of these). --MGA73 (talk) 17:48, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Similar to copyright acts of other countries, Indian Copyright Act (1957) does not specifically mention about the "signatures". According to the chapter three: "copyright shall subsist throughout India for artistic works", but it doesn't say anything about the merit of work. As many of the Indian laws and acts are modeled after British system, there's a possibility that signatures are also entitled to copyright protection. But you can never be sure, so it's better to ask Copyright Office of India.--Bill william comptonTalk 20:31, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

File:The Bar.svg

Unfortunately, this SVG contains no actual vector data... AnonMoos (talk) 23:23, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Can you replace it with a better one, please? —Bill william comptonTalk 06:01, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
That would mean vectorizing the raw raster data, and it would be laborious task for me to even just extract the PNG from within the SVG. If you're uploading an SVG, then you're really supposed to have already done the vectorization step yourself. However, you can ask on Commons:Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop... -- AnonMoos (talk) 09:51, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Bill william compton, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

 • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the Rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
 • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
 • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

File:British Rail Class 70 170205 train at Ipswich.jpg

While it's your right to rename files if the names are wrong, please be careful with what you type. File:British Rail Class 70 170205 train at Ipswich.jpg isn't a Class 70, its a Class 170. (If I was really picky I'd also question whether it's a British Rail anything, but that's another story). Geof Sheppard (talk) 16:36, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Gosh, I intended to write 170. Don't know how I missed the key. So, please suggest an appropriate name, should I use 'British Rail Class 170' or not?—Bill william comptonTalk 18:38, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
It happens to us all! I'd suggest 'Greater Anglia train 170205 at Ipswich' - I don't think we need to state the class number as it always appears in the train number. Geof Sheppard (talk) 07:55, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Wow, cool it down. That was unnecessary. Nobody's saying you anything. The renaming request was made by User:Takabeg and I just reviewed it. And, IMHO, the move was plausible.—Bill william comptonTalk 04:36, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Please don't....

...mark new pages for patrolled when you nominate them for speedy deletion. Thanks for helping though! Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 15:17, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

Why? I think this is a usual procedure of NPP. We do it all the times on other projects.—Bill william comptonTalk 15:19, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
I know, but it's not common practice here. Nominating them for speedy deletion is fine, and patrolling edits as well, but please don't do this with new pages. There are plenty of admins who regularly check Special:NewPages and therefore it's faster for them if the real new pages are yellow. In that case they can be easily deleted. Trijnsteltalk 15:26, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

Inappropriate renaming

Hi. As long as I understand this renaming is not appropriate. Did you read the talk page ? I believe that even the uploader wants to make a person (s) member of uploaders' ethnic group, wrong information mustn't be accepted. And I think that our best way is using titles without ethnic and religious factors. Thank you. Takabeg (talk) 23:31, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

I couldn't agree more. Uploader has taken it personally (as you can see in just above section) for no reason.—Bill william comptonTalk 04:39, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
Hi. I'm not sure if I should burden you with the following... anyway, I think you are dealing with this issue very frivolously. The discussions about if Zazas are Kurds or not are endless, and according to where you are, in Europe, Turkey or Kurdistan the criteria are different. They actually are Zaza and Kurdish, according to what sources you have. But why I reacted this time, is that you have renamed a picture, using one criterion, but forgetting about the criterion why files shouldn't be changed #2 Files should NOT be renamed only because the filename is not in English. Takabeg may be an experienced Wikimedia editor or not, but s/he has very little real knowledge about Kurdish culture and language. Gomada may be the bad guy here who takes everything personally, but he is a very skillful editor in Kurdish Wikipedia. I would ask you to rename the file again, Gomada himself uploaded it, so please be sensitive to his opinion, to it's original name, or if the Adjective Kurdish is so misguiding, take it out, but leave the title of the file be in Kurdish please. If you can't do this, where should I leave a message? Thank you for your help. --MikaelF (talk) 10:04, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your detailed explanation of the grievances of Kurdish people. Please accept my apology if this somehow offended you or your fellow Kurdish Wikipdian someway. But this file wasn't renamed because of its non-English title. As I don't have any knowledge about this matter, please take your request to User:INeverCry, he is an admin who handled the situation.—Bill william comptonTalk 11:15, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Bill for your reply and help. --MikaelF (talk) 12:33, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
How do you think of the grievances of Zaza people ? :) Our best way is neutral naming. I prefer the name in English, neither in Kurdish language nor Zazaki language. Takabeg (talk) 12:51, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
My heart is with all oppressed people, be Zaza, Kurds, Catalans, and neutrality is important. But so is respect. As to the English language, this is a personal opinion of yours, but here try to be neutral as well. I have no predjudice to any language how insignificant it may be, like Kurdish or Zazaki, or any of their dialects, but if it is important for the uploader of a file to self-affirm using his/her own language please do respect don't change it into English. It's just not good manners! --MikaelF (talk) 10:31, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

Files by User:Ranjankumar Sahoo22

Hi Bill,

I suggested renaming the files in a manner that they remain harmonized and also respecting the uploader's intent to be credited in the filename! Is that not a relevant factor? And btw, we need to desysop everyone at hi.wiki ;-) Regards, Lovy Singhal (talk) 14:36, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

Hello Lovy, the file renaming criterion #2 talks about "change[s] from completely meaningless names into suitable names, according to what the image[s] display", but these images don't display that they were taken by Ranjan. Also, Ajanta Caves by Ranjan.jpg is a very subjective title. Uploaders don't need to credit themselves in the filenames. You are doing a great job by nominating them as these titles are really messed up, thanks for that.
About the sysops of Hindi Wikipedia, they will be automatically relegated [to normal user level] on September 20. So, don't bother for that :)—Bill william comptonTalk 14:50, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

Sorry for bugging you continuously but regarding File:Standing Jain Tirthankaras at Ajanta Caves.jpg I would like to know what makes you conclude that these are Jain Tirthankaras and not Buddhist? I didn't find any mention of Jainism on the en.wiki page on Ajanta Caves :-$ Regards, Lovy Singhal (talk) 15:16, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

I don't remember any instance of this type of Buddhist iconography. So, I thought these are probably Jain Tirthankaras, which can also be wrong as Tirthankaras are always depicted standing straight. But I should have researched more because as it seems there is no Jainism trace in Ajanta. Please again nominate the file for rename with appropriate title.—Bill william comptonTalk 16:34, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

File:Flag of the Durrani Empire.svg

Hello. The name change you made is misleading and should be undone. The prior name was correct because this was only a provincial flag. http://worldpics.com.au/Afghanistan/flags/index.html The empire's flag was depicting a cluster of wheat, a sword, and stars on a background of red and green. Historical Dictionary of Afghanistan, by w:Ludwig W. Adamec. http://books.google.com/books?id=tp5IrLhWbTkC&lpg=PP1&pg=PA147#v=onepage&q&f=false --Officer (talk) 04:49, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

But the link you have given supports the move.—Bill william comptonTalk 12:07, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
No it does not. According to Encyclopedia Iranica (authoritive scholarly work), "Almost nothing is known about the flags of Afghanistan during the reign of the Sadōzay dynasty and the early decades of the Moḥammadzay dynasty." That's refering to the w:Durrani Empire, so how can you claim that this empty green and white flag represented the entire Islamic Durrani Empire? It should be named "flag of Herat until 1842" because that is accurate. [1] [2] [3] --Officer (talk) 20:12, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

Just wondering if you've ever considered putting in a request for adminship? I can't see any reason why you wouldn't pass. Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Sardinian flag

Thank you for having accepted my moving proposal of the Sardinian flag. I have delinked all the instances that weren't done by bots. There's still one problem. The Atlas of Sardinia still links to File:Flag of Sardinia.svg. It should show File:Flag of Sardinia region.svg instead, but there's an automatic function forcing to use such names as "Flag of short form.svg". Unfortunately, Flag of Sardinia.svg was occupied by an incorrect version (in the meanwhile it has been moved to File:Flag of Sardinia (alternate).svg) but the file seems not to be completely deleted to move the most correct version (File:Flag of Sardinia region.svg) to the "short form name" format. Could you please fix this problem? Thanks in advance.--Carnby (talk) 09:41, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

File:금동연가7년명여래입상.jpg

Hello. I've seen you renamed the above file. The original name in English. The new name is in Korean. Is the change of language permissible this way? Also, I've seen that even in the plain English rename requests, User:HappyMidnight has been suggesting rather offtrack names. What's your take on it? Hindustanilanguage (talk) 16:43, 22 February 2013 (UTC).

The current name is most appropriate and descriptive. Commons is a multilingual project and I don't see any reason to favour English over other languages. The file had a meaningless name and User:HappyMidnight's suggestion had its merits. Besides, the file is related to a Korean subject.—Bill william comptonTalk 18:12, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
It is true that "Commons is a multilingual project and I don't see any reason to favour English over other languages." But there's no need to favour Non-English over English as well (vice-versa of the previous statement)."the file is related to a Korean subject" - true, but have you assessed the relevance of the suggested name? Take the case of this file history - suggested rename by this user did not seem to be supported by the file description or depiction. I had to act with caution. I suggest the same to you. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 18:53, 22 February 2013 (UTC).
HL, I don't understand how this is a favour of any kind? Are you implying that I don't "[assess] the relevance of the suggested names"? This case you have presented has nothing to do with the issue under discussion. 금동연가7년명여래입상 is "supported by the file description", and most importantly, it is supported by a Wikipedia article. I analyse the request before taking any action.—Bill william comptonTalk 20:59, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Bill, I never assumed any intentional wrong from your side but was looking at the possibility of any inadvertent slip, especially, in the light of similar rename requests by the user. You've cited ko:wp article, so its ok. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 05:07, 23 February 2013 (UTC).

Portrait of Benvenuto Cellini

Hi,

And thanks for the renaming of File:CELLINI PORTRAIT.JPG. But why St Macarius? Since there is a contreversy, this last name is not more consensual than the other one. I know, I'm playing the devil's advocate, but wikipedian neutrality impones not to take side. --MathsPoetry (talk) 15:59, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Ah, I just noticed File:CELLINI et RECTO TURIN et BAS RELIEF ZOOM.jpg, from same uploader, in support of her thesis that this man's head is a self-portrait from Cellini. This one too needs renaming, if not simply suppressed as it combines 3 pictures from different authors in support of a disputed thesis. --MathsPoetry (talk) 16:02, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

I researched a bit and found a Russian source to support the current title. I don't want to sound rude but the name you suggested was meaningless. I don't know anything about this portrait or the related controversies but I'm all open for better names - any suggestions?—Bill william comptonTalk 17:28, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
You're not being rude: English is not my mother language, and I am certainly not the right person to suggest a good title. My remark was just that "St Macarius" is just an hypothesis among others. The only thing that is sure in this affair is that it always returns to Russia: the owner, the experts, the newspapers, the exhibitions.
Just so that you know the background: the French article fr:Benvenuto Cellini (Portrait) is currently being submitted for deletion. Voice has been raised that they have been trying to use Wikipedia in support for the valuation of this painting. That was important enough for them to threaten the contributors of legal action and try to get their real identity.
Best, --MathsPoetry (talk) 16:28, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

File:Synkavičy. Сынкавічы (1890).jpg: wrong renaming

Hello. Unfortunately, you renamed file File:Synkavičy. Сынкавічы (1890).jpg according to wrong criterion. Actually there was no obvious errors in the file name. According to several sourses [4], [5] name Synkovičy is widely used by local inhabitants and it's proper historical name of the village. In addition it's widely used in scientific literature: for example, Энцыклапедыя гісторыі Беларусі = Encyclopedia of Belarusian History. 2001. Т. 6, кн. 1. P. 459 or Вялікае Княства Літоўскае = Grand Duchy of Lithuania. 2007. Т. 2. P. 648, which are the most prominant scientific Belarusian encyclopedias. You can compare by youself usage of both names (Synkavičy vs Synkovičy) to find out that there is no obvious errors and name Synkovičy is completely appropriate. So, could you, please, return fist name File:Synkovičy. Сынковічы (1890).jpg, because actually there were no reasons for renaming according to current renaming criterions. File:Cuma Camii, Prizren (Saat Kulesinden).JPG

Hello dear Bill william compton, I saw that my files name changed by your action. I upload it on its native name. "Cuma Camii" is this temples/churchs name in modern Turkish and old Ottoman Turkish. Its not misleading. Our Lady of Ljeviš is its English and Bogorodica Ljeviška is its Serbian name. Its normal. So this historical monument has got many names, of course. I chose one of them (Cuma Camii). Its very simple and very clear and this name doesn't mean "it is mosque". There is no need to discuss. Criterias is here: 1# There is no uploader requested, 2# Name is suitable, 3# Name is not misleading name, it is one of native name, 4# Name is meaningful, 5# There is no error, 6# There is no need to harmonizing, 7# Name doesn't contain any pejorative, offensive or crude language items. This renaming is wrong because of many Commons criterias and I want to be its name like before: File:Cuma Camii, Prizren (Saat Kulesinden).JPG. Photo Balkan (talk) 15:57, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

I must say that you are wrong. You cannot insist on your own historical moment, as this object now is not the Cuma Camii, but Serbian orthodox church. 2#, name is not sutable, per argument. 3# It is misleading, names must have their own meaning. 5# Already explained. This renaming is actually quite ok. And your images are not entitled to stay with that name forever, that is the reason to have rename option in the first place. Word "cami" means mosque! Cuma Camii is erroneous and misleading name for this object, as we are living in 2013, when this is obviously not a mosque. All best. --WhiteWriter speaks 16:42, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
WhiteWriter, I understand, the main problem is a bit political-sociological. As how I see, you're working on Serbian titles mainly. Maybe you are Serbian. They are not problem, they are normal. Your argument is mainly political. And I don’t want to be in a political discussion. This historical building (church or temple) was church, than it became mosque. Today it is closed church/temple. This church’s Turkish name is "Cuma Camii" since 15th century. You can search. Today it is not mosque of course. But I didn't say anything about its religious situation. I said that I choose Turkish variant. Today can we use it as Cuma Kilisesi in Turkish? It will be so non-scientific, repulsive... “Cuma Camii” is today available name on Turkish nomenclature and also in Kosovo (Turkish and Albanian). I just had chosen a name for my photograph. Onomastics say that historical places’ names can refer to different word worlds. Especially religious places’ names are main issue for it. One language/variant use it as its thinking or background, another language/variant use it another.
Now, as I said, this historical buildings Commons name is Turkish name. One of its original names. It is very simple. No one can say, what name should I or any user choose, if there is no naming problem like pejorative, offensive or crude language items. Criterias are so clear: “Files should NOT be renamed only because the filename is not English and/or is not correctly capitalized (Remember, Commons is a multilingual project, so there's no reason to favor English over other languages).File:Cuma Camii, Prizren (Saat Kulesinden).JPG is this files own name and there is no need for renaming. Thank you. Photo Balkan (talk) 12:23, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
