Recompressing PNGs
Hi. If that takes any significant time and effort from you, it might not be worth it. I guess it mostly affects the full-size versions, and not really the thumbnails? Maybe you should focus on the most popular images, and those of them most likely to be viewed full-size. Some can be found using http://stats.grok.se/, and others are POTY, POTD, and winners of competitions. --AVRS (talk) 08:02, 18 July 2015 (UTC)
- Hi AVRS. Thanks for the suggestion. The PotD/PoTY images were a good idea, and there turned out to be a number of large (and beautiful) images that compressed really well, eg this and this.
- Cheers, Cmdrjameson (talk) 15:35, 26 July 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Norman Bücher im Portrait.png. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Why does the thumbnail of your version look significantly different (lighter) than the thumbnail of the original file version? AnonMoos (talk) 01:54, 26 July 2015 (UTC)
- That's a good question. I don't know why, but it appears to be an issue specific to the thumbnailer. If you look at both full-size images, you can see that they appear identical in the browser. I was worried for a bit that the compressors I was using might be discarding unused PNG chunks, but when I ran both images through pngcheck, you can see that both of them have the same gAMA and cHRM chunks (saying what the gamma and chromaticity of the image is), however the new image was converted to greyscale because the pixel data for the R,G,B channels was always identical.
File: old.png (348422 bytes) chunk IHDR at offset 0x0000c, length 13 525 x 727 image, 24-bit RGB, non-interlaced chunk pHYs at offset 0x00025, length 9: 2835x2835 pixels/meter (72 dpi) chunk gAMA at offset 0x0003a, length 4: 0.45454 chunk cHRM at offset 0x0004a, length 32 White x = 0.31269 y = 0.32899, Red x = 0.63999 y = 0.33001 Green x = 0.3 y = 0.6, Blue x = 0.15 y = 0.05999 chunk IDAT at offset 0x00076, length 348284 zlib: deflated, 32K window, maximum compression chunk IEND at offset 0x550fe, length 0 No errors detected in old.png (6 chunks, 69.6% compression).
File: new.png (157116 bytes) chunk IHDR at offset 0x0000c, length 13 525 x 727 image, 8-bit grayscale, non-interlaced chunk pHYs at offset 0x00025, length 9: 2835x2835 pixels/meter (72 dpi) chunk gAMA at offset 0x0003a, length 4: 0.45454 chunk cHRM at offset 0x0004a, length 32 White x = 0.31269 y = 0.32899, Red x = 0.63999 y = 0.33001 Green x = 0.3 y = 0.6, Blue x = 0.15 y = 0.05999 chunk IDAT at offset 0x00076, length 156978 zlib: deflated, 32K window, superfast compression chunk IEND at offset 0x265b4, length 0 No errors detected in new.png (6 chunks, 58.8% compression).
- Is the new thumbnail causing a problem for you you? Cmdrjameson (talk) 14:53, 26 July 2015 (UTC)
- It doesn't directly affect anything that I care about (as far as I can see), but I thought it was curious, and potentially signals a problem... AnonMoos (talk) 02:18, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
- May be connected with what is discussed at Commons:Graphics village pump#PNG darkness at preview sizes... -- AnonMoos (talk) 07:55, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
Decrease/increase
Hello,, I noticed you reduced the file size of Galileogalilei.png. But do you realize you actually increased the file size now? That is because old files are not overwritten, they stored there as well entirely so the total file siz is not 488kB, but circa 1100 kB.. Regards --Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 08:05, 26 July 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Jan, thanks for the feedback. I understand the issue, and because of that I restrict my script to only upload images that compress to 75% or less of the original size. Occasionally I run across outliers that compress to <10% of the original size, which is clearly worth doing, but mostly it's in the 60-75% range. There's a tradeoff here though, isn't there? If I compress a frequently viewed image (eg a logo on a page, or something like that), then there'll be bandwidth savings for wikipedia (and the users). This can be especially useful on slow connections or mobile internet.
- I'm not sure how expensive file storage is for wikipedia, but if it became a problem, I wonder would it be possible to run a deduplication job that removes older images when the pixel values and metadata for two images are identical.
- For what it's worth, I think I'm going to run this script much less from now on, because I wanted to prove the idea to myself more than anything else, and to see if there could be much benefit to recompression.
- Cheers, Cmdrjameson (talk) 15:12, 26 July 2015 (UTC).
- I don't think that server disk storage is a limiting factor, as far as typical PNG-optimized images go. Every day, thousands of multi-megabyte JPEGs are uploaded to Commons... AnonMoos (talk) 02:20, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
Autopatrol given
Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. Denniss (talk) 08:54, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

File:Internet Explorer 10.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. Copyright status: File:Accueil-Firebird-Titoxx69.png
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Accueil-Firebird-Titoxx69.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

In the File:Time Zones of the Middle East.svg could you change the color for Northern Cyprus which followed Turkey thus reflecting the latest change, and could you also either get rid of the neighboring countries shaded in gray or include all of them? The map doesn't look aesthetically pretty with some of the neighboring countries missing in the map. It looks like a jigsaw puzzle missing its pieces.

Unfortunately, you didn't include a Gamma chunk in your uploaded version, which can create problems for the greyscale PNGs with the current PNG-resizing software on Commons... AnonMoos (talk) 05:44, 8 October 2016 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Neelakanta indus sign pair.png
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Neelakanta indus sign pair.png.
Thank you. |

Thanks for uploading File:Neelakanta indus sign pair.png.
Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Neelakanta indus sign pair.png]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

File:Tommy Hilfiger banner.PNG has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.Yours sincerely, Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 05:48, 12 January 2017 (UTC)
Hello! The Wikimedia Foundation is asking for your feedback in a survey. We want to know how well we are supporting your work on and off wiki, and how we can change or improve things in the future.[survey 1] The opinions you share will directly affect the current and future work of the Wikimedia Foundation. You have been randomly selected to take this survey as we would like to hear from your Wikimedia community. To say thank you for your time, we are giving away 20 Wikimedia T-shirts to randomly selected people who take the survey.[survey 2] The survey is available in various languages and will take between 20 and 40 minutes.
You can find more information about this project. This survey is hosted by a third-party service and governed by this privacy statement. Please visit our frequently asked questions page to find more information about this survey. If you need additional help, or if you wish to opt-out of future communications about this survey, send an email to surveys@wikimedia.org.
