Image:Zawahiri.jpg edit

Please note that this image has previously been deleted per request on Commons:Deletion requests. The photo was obviously not taken by a U.S. government employee, so the copyright status remains unknown. /Slarre 15:26, 21 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

That does not matter. as far as I know policy states as long as the source is from the US GOV then the picture is allowed. DragonFire1024 19:20, 21 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
No. That the image is simply used by the US government does not automatically make it PD; as defined by US Copyright Law, "a work prepared by an officer or employee of the United States Government as part of that person's official duties". See Work of the United States Government. /Slarre 13:03, 22 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Abu Ghraib pics edit

I'm interested in why you've tagged the SBS Abu Ghraib pics as copyvios. As AbuGhraibPic says, the pictures are PD, as long as they're authentic. So you're tagging the pictures because you allege them to be forgeries? "A Pentagon official, speaking on condition of anonymity, has confirmed the images aired on Wednesday are authentic, the AFP news agency reports."[1] I think we can, for the purposes of the Commons, safely assume that the pics are authentic, in which case they're not copyvios. —Gabbe 16:53, 18 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi DragonFire. Generally in the case of lack of source information, the image should be tagged (no source) and the uploader should be notified, rather than Copyvio. Thanks, pfctdayelise (translate?) 18:22, 18 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Photos of Abu Ghraib Abuse edit

I am in the process of removing all of your copyvio tags from the photos of the abuse in Abu Ghraib Prison, Iraq. These images are in the public domain because they are ineligible for copyright. This applies worldwide. Pictures taken by U.S. military personnel on duty are ineligible for copyright, unless the photographer successfully claims that the photographs were not taken as part of his or her official duties. The photographers of the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse photos have not made this claim, and have in fact denied it under oath. --Descendall 07:08, 19 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

These pictures are NOT sourced properly and until they are they are not from abugraib as we cannot prove that. Fine, violate your own policies. DragonFire1024 13:02, 19 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Most American media outlets have confirmed that these photos were on the CD leaked to them about a year ago. The Washington Post wrote an article about how they have had these photos since the Abu Ghraib story first broke. The United States Central Command, which oversees operations in Iraq, confirmed that they were from Abu Ghraib and said that it was irresponsible to publish them now, as these pictures were taken at the same time that the last batch of Abu Ghraib pictures were taken. Salon.com not only has the pictures, but they also apparantly have leaked memos from the Abu Ghraib investigation describing each photo. Several photos show American Military Police officers and prisoners that we already know where in Abu Ghraib. For example, Satar Jabar, by far the most famous Abu Ghraib inmate, appears in several of the photos. Ivan Frederick, who is currently in a military prison for his role in the abuse, appears in the photos, as does the inmate on whom he famously sat. Charles Graner, who is serving ten years in prison for abusing the inmates, appears on several of the new photos. I don't know what more proof you want. --Descendall 17:45, 19 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Dragonfire, this is being discussed on COM:DEL. If you want to talk about these images please do so there. Please let that process run its course. Thanks, pfctdayelise (translate?) 00:32, 20 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

It does not matter to me what paper they were in or what not. If the images are not properly sourced, as to where they came from, then they do not belong on the commons according to opolicy. We need to source them PROPERLY. We cannot just upload pictures because we "think" they are from a US source...WE NEED PROOF! We need the Source links. But like I said, if you want to go against your own policies, then so be it. DragonFire1024 21:57, 20 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Image:(253) mathilde crop.jpg edit

Hi. I removed the copyvio tag from this image because the source image is in the public domain and this image is more tightly cropped from the original making it useful. I don't think it qualifies for speedy deletion. If you want to attempt deletion via Deletion Requests, you are welcome to try. Sorry. MECUtalk 14:12, 20 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Being a cropped of a high resolution image is fine. The original is high resolution, and the crop just removed a lot of the black around it. MECUtalk 13:10, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Use of Badname edit

Badname should only be used when both images are identical and the image you placed the template on was uploaded by you. If the image is identical but not uploaded by you use Duplicate instead. Re: Image:175935main sn2006gy main 516.jpg edit

Regarding the deletion of this image, note that on the bottom of the NASA webpage (here) there is a link to the original authors (here) at the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. The image is also credited to them (NASA/CXC), which means it is their work. Their image use policy (here) clearly states "The images on this web site may be used for non-commercial educational and public information purposes", which means this image can't be used on the Commons. Thanks. --Tom (talk - email) 21:22, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please re-read the image notice page here, which states "credit images to "NASA/CXC/SAO" unless other credits are given". This is directly after their noncom/edu-only usage restriction statement. Almost all of the credits say NASA, yet it does not change the fact that their images have usage restrictions. --Tom (talk - email) 21:43, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
While it may be operated for NASA, it is operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO). Understand that this is a Smithsonian-owned program, not a NASA-owned program, though it does received NASA funding. It is free to restrict usage on its work as it pleases, as just about every Smithsonian program does. I'm sure that was a stipulation in the funding agreement. Also, note the image restriction usage page on the SAO website, which is even firmer in the restriction notices: http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/policies/image_use.html. I'm not sure how they could be any clearer regarding the use of their images. Legally speaking, we have to respect these restrictions. --Tom (talk - email) 22:04, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I've been in contact with the observatory to help clear up their copyright policy. It ends up that images credited ONLY to the NASA/CXC (and also NASA/CXC/[name of specific author], i.e. NASA/CXC/M. Weiss), are public domain images that have the same usage restrictions as any standard NASA image. Their "noncommercial and educational use only" policy is in place because they use a great many images from third parties. For example, the photo montage that you uploaded only has one PD image and at least one copyrighted image from the Lick telescope. The other image credited to UC Berkeley may or may not be copyrighted; I'm clearing that up. Thanks. --Tom (talk - email) 13:03, 9 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the quick work on finding this image and cropping it to make it available for a breaking story. A couple of nits... first I think the link to the source you give is not right, it goes to the license that applies to MN state gov works, rather than to the page where the image came from. Can you fix that? I did a quick search on the MN-DOT site and did not find the map myself. Second, I think the license tag you gave is for US Fed work since it talks about the Fed DOT. I do not know if there is a MN gov license tag to use, trying to research that, and I'll fix it if I find it, or discuss whether we should create one. Thanks again for your efforts! ++Lar: t/c 13:55, 2 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

PS it's clear to me the image itself is PD if it came from the MN DOT site per the disclaimer you cite and link, it's just that it's not quite tagged right and not attributed right. So it's not like it needs deleting, just fixing. Thanks! ++Lar: t/c 14:04, 2 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello!

Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. 78.48.8.63 10:14, 2 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree that this appears to be a copyright violation. While the FBI may have "borrowed" the image for a report, they don't have the power to release into the public domain a copyrighted photo created by others. This image obviously belongs to this site. (It's absurd to think that a pro-pedophile jewelry store would use an FBI photo of their product as an advertisement). Please remove the PD claim unless you have evidence that the site claiming copyright didn't create the image. Will Beback 08:46, 27 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I doubt the US government will commit copyvio buy publishing copyrighted material. But whatever. DragonFire1024 11:48, 27 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I don't think that the FBI A) cares if they violate the copyright of a jewelry store, or B) intended to publish the image. It appears to be an internal memo that was leaked or unofficially publicized. I interpret your "whatever" as acquiescence in removing the PD tag. There is a GFDL drawing of the same logo. This images isn't necessary to illustrate articles so deleting it won't leave a large vacuum.Cheers Will Beback 09:10, 28 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Would you mind adding new pictures to the more specific category Buffalo, New York 2008 "Anonymous" anti-Scientology protests in stead of the more general Category:2008 "Anonymous" anti-Scientology protests? This will help keep all the pictures organized and managable once many more start being uploaded. Thanks, and let me know if you think a different organizational scheme might work better. Hello, DragonFire1024!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
