"Happy Diwali!" edit

While Diwali is popularly known as the "festival of lights", the most significant spiritual meaning behind it is "the awareness of the inner light". It is the belief that there is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atman. The celebration of Diwali as the "victory of good over evil” refers to the light of higher knowledge dispelling all ignorance, the ignorance that masks one's true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality. With this awakening come compassion and the awareness of the oneness of all things (higher knowledge). This brings Satcitananda (joy or peace). Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Diwali is the celebration of this Inner Light. While the story behind Diwali and the manner of celebration varies from region to, the essence is the same – to rejoice in the Inner Light! And this year Diwali and All Souls' Day come together to fully defeat the Evil! "Happy Diwali!"JKadavoor Jee 06:01, 2 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

File:Lenin Mausoleum at night (2007).jpg edit

File:Lenin Mausoleum at night (2007).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Halavar (talk) 23:37, 5 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

HI Godot13.
Thanks for message.
Maybe you have seen that I have given some technical explanations and arguments on the Deletion Request page.
About the Deletion Requests in general, the process is normal here, it is the usual way to do. We get the time enough for a discussion, in the request discussion page. No admin will close until the discussion continues (in this specific case, I think the DR will fail). For the record, the history begins here. It seems that our friend Halavar was shocked by my comment, so now he tries to understand the NoFoP issue, and perhaps, he tries to "make a point" too. The "NoFoP" issue is very difficult, and hard to be understood. For instance, there is no link between the "cultural heritage" and the Freedom of Panorama or not. And the "NoFoP" laws are not the same in the different "NoFoP" countries. Well, as for us in the old Europe, it is a real nightmare (but beware ! there is no full FoP in the US neither !). Well, don't worry, there is no attack in Halavar's behaviour, and deletion requests are usual on "Commons" (even never pleasant...). Cheers from Paris,--Jebulon (talk) 15:53, 6 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks for the explanation Jebulon. It's been a while since I was last in Paris, but hopefully not too much longer ;-) Best-Godot13 (talk) 16:16, 6 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2013! Please help with this survey.

Dear Godot13,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2013, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again a few minutes of your time.

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 365,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet).

If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2013.

Kind regards,

the Wiki Loves Monuments team

Thanks to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History ! By the way Godot13, could you please upload a Rescription à l'emprunt forcé ? I can't find a single image of it. All the best, --Spiessens (talk) 10:55, 16 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
@Yann - Thanks for the nomination. @Spiessens - I will be back at the Smithsonian in February and will look specifically for an example of Rescription à l'emprunt forcé.-Godot13 (talk) 18:05, 16 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Oh boy, now I'm in trouble... ;-) I will look to see what banknotes there are from India (I am sure there is some selection, I have seen some of them).
 • Spiessens- I believe I've found two Emprunt forcé de l'an 4. one for 5 Francs and one for 10 Francs. There is no reference (that I could find) to these in the standard world currency references. I will have images uploaded in a few days...-Godot13 (talk) 22:41, 25 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Amazing ! But maybe it could be "(Bon pour) 5 francs" ? Hope to see it soon and well done ! Yours, --Spiessens (talk) 23:18, 25 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Spiessens-Yes, the first line of the body of the note reads "Bon pour la somme de ---" and the amount is hand-written. Is this a different type, not what you were referring to?-Godot13 (talk) 01:31, 26 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
It is a "coupon" : the Emprunt forcé is a State Bond System. There is no proof that those coupons (or "bons pour") were used as monney paper. But, who knows ? Anyway, this document is very rare. --Spiessens (talk) 10:28, 28 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello! I gladly nominate your picture in Polish Wikipedia, it's very good and I think it's deserves to get a medal. But it might be a problem because of our statute in Featured Pictures in Polish Wikipedia. It's says: "Will be considered only works created by Wikipedians active on the Polish Wikipedia." I start a discussion about that in Polish Wikipedia and because of that, we must wait for a conclusion. I will send you a message. Halavar (talk) 19:29, 16 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Commons Photo Challenge January 2014 edit

Re:Polish notes edit

Hello! I would be happy, if you scan those old notes, publish on Commons and nominate them as VIC. There is no copyright problem to scan and upload them to Commons, not only about those at least 100 years old, but much more younger. You can legally scan and upload notes produced before 1939.

You should look here: Banknotes of Poland and here: Historical coins and banknotes of Poland. Your collection of images will be very useful. Regards, Halavar (talk) 01:36, 7 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Interesting... My next trip to the Smithsonian is in February. I will start with the oldest Polish notes in the collection (which I think date back to the 1790's, not sure). I thought it would make a good addition to some of the articles on pl.wiki.-Godot13 (talk) 02:25, 7 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Picture of the Year 2013 R1 Announcement edit

File:US-$100-IBN-1865-Fr.212e.jpg edit

Hello Godot13,
the above image page contains this code following directly after the Information-template:

2013030510011547
<noinclude>

Related to the last two lines:

 • (noinclude)
- Really meant to stay here at all?
 • ((DEFAULTSORT:... ))
- Shouldn't this category-related Magic Word been listed directly above the category-lines?

(this is an issue for different other of your "Smithsonian-Institute"-uploads)
Jaybear...disc.12:24, 2 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that looks well for me, with the paired tokens <noinclude> </noinclude>
And inside their OTRS-categories the extra-DEFAULTSORT seems to have a special meaning; but I'm not so deeeply involved with this matter
– following the instructions eventually given in OTRS-emails may be the best choice.
Jaybear...disc.19:26, 2 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

This looks like another interesting one of the special US-bank-note series, and it's missing here:

On this website any info about copyright is missing ...
Is there a reason for not being included on wikimedia commons?
Jaybear...disc.19:44, 2 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jaybear - All U.S. paper currency falls within the public domain. I am (as a volunteer) digitizing the Smithsonian paper currency collection (at least starting with U.S.) through quarterly trips to Washington DC. I know the note to which you refer and I have a higher res image which will be uploaded. I don't understand your reference to Commons - all of the currency images are loaded through Commons. Thanks-Godot13 (talk) 19:54, 2 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
My question was only about the missing image (100k$) in the above category.
Nice to hear about more images waiting for WM commons.

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement edit

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open! edit

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Thanks,

Sky colour edit

I looked at two of your QI candidates (File:UK-2014-Oxford-Corpus_Christi_College_02.jpg and File:UK-2014-Oxford-All_Souls_College_03.jpg. As usual very high quality and resolution, but the sky looks strange imo (too much magenta). Best regards, --ArildV (talk) 09:01, 30 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the input ArildV. I'm working on a new monitor that I probably need to calibrate. Other than calibration, what would be your suggestion to reduce the magenta (in CS6 and/or Lightroom) manually? Sky color has always been a bit tricky for me... Many thanks.--Godot13 (talk) 14:52, 30 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Just to let you know I've nominated your scan of the banknote for FP. Regards, Maire (talk) 10:58, 18 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Maire, I see it's also nominated on the pl.wikipedia...-Godot13 (talk) 14:47, 18 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes, this is where it drew my attention. And it seems to be doing pretty well there, too :). I can see you've contributed a whole valuable set of historical Polish notes. Do you think there is a chance of the Smithsonian or some other national institution having the missing two notes in their collection? Regards, Maire (talk) 15:12, 18 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Maire- They are not impossible to find, just difficult (in the same condition as the other, nearly impossible). I once showed some of the directors of the National Bank of Poland the Smithsonian notes and they had never seen the 1794 series before (but they were administrators). I haven't seen the 500 or 1,000 at the Smithsonian, but I may try approaching some dealers in old currency to see if I can at least get images...--Godot13 (talk) 15:31, 18 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

1877 B&L 4% consoles and funding loans edit

Hello Godot13, Could you tell me a little bit more about this 1877 B&L 4% consoles..and the funding loans . Were they the same size as the older large currency and were they ever issued? ...thanks....03:11, 4 September 2014 (UTC)~Hpman2

Hi Hpman2 - I wish I could! I know very little about them and have had a very hard time getting information from the period. They were issued (very rare in issued form) and they are significantly larger than the old-style large currency. I still hope to find some good resources and write a list-article. I left you a comment on your Wikipedia talk page (I had to start the talk page, I hope you don't mind). Thanks.--Godot13 (talk) 05:24, 4 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

1875 certificate of deposits edit

Hello Godot13, I have been teaching my children what old U.S currency used to look like and the difference in sizes. And then i came across the 1875 CERTIFICATE OF DEPOSIT, 4% CONSOLES & FUNDED LOAN OF 1891 NOTES... i would like to know a little bit more about them. Could you tell me a little more about these notes such as size of these compared to the older large currency notes? I know that the U.S. made the older large notes at a size of 7.42 inches for width and 3.125 inches for height, how do these differ in size?, where they ever issued? And who used them (general public or banks)?. thanks HPMAN213:53, 23 October 2014 (UTC)10-23-2014

Licencing Issues edit

I have noticed that many of your images depicting United States currency are incorrectly licensed, contain more than one licence, or you state that you are the copyright holder of the work. However they are solely Works of the United States government| and cannot be copyrighted, and therefor have no copyright holder, and are part of the public domain.

 • Gamebuster - Thanks for your interest. This has actually been addressed a few times on English Wikipedia to the general satisfaction of the FP community. The object itself is produced by the US government, hence the PD-USGov. Adding myself as releasing the image was to ensure there was no confusion over my having created the images. It is also how the OTRS custom template was prepared when it was issued.-Godot13 (talk) 17:46, 24 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

I'd like to raise another issue regarding File:DWI-8r-Danish West Indies (St. Croix)-2 Dalere (1898).jpg (re Hafspajen's talk page at enwiki). You tagged the image as an anonymous work where the copyright has expired. The bill states however that it was issued by the Danish ministry of finances, so I suppose PD-DenmarkGov applies here. Note also that while banknotes issued by the Danish National Bank are subject to copyright, this appears to be a promissory note rather that was issued on behalf of the colonial administration and should therefore be a governmental document. De728631 (talk) 15:33, 26 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

 • Hi De728631- I have found that not all paper currency falls under a government works PD heading so as a general rule I use the EU-Anonymous tag (i.e., the artwork/engraving cannot be attributed to a specific person and/or the date of first issue is when the clock begins) for all notes from EU countries. Thanks.--Godot13 (talk) 16:52, 26 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Reproduction Temple of Rocks in a book edit

Dear Andrew Shiva,

I am writing you, because I came across your great photographs on wikimedia commons. I like to use one of your photographs in my upcoming book and I kindly like to ask you for your permission.

I am a freelance author and photographer from Germany and I have written a new book about texts, poems and slogans in public space, called "Street Messages". It will be published in spring 2015 by Dokument Press from Sweden.

In this book I like to use one of your photographs to document the Arabic scriptures at temples and I like to use this following image: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Israel-2013(2)-Jerusalem-Temple_Mount-Dome_of_the_Rock_(SE_exposure).jpg

I would be very glad to be able to use this image in my historic chapter about the written word. If you agree to use this image, I would be happy when you can give me your permission and return the permission below to my email info@keinom.com or just include your name. You will surely receive a photo-credit at the end of the book.

If you have any further questions or like to receive a copy of the book, please do let me know.

All my best wishes and thanks for your interest, with best regards, Nicholas Ganz

1856 Journal - rigsdaler and subunits edit

Could use a little numismatic help with an 1856 journal entry, to wit:
Journal of Peder Madsen (1856)
"April 26 - The weather: unstable.
... President Ahmunsen who made it known to the brethren that 40 rigsdaler were needed for running expenses. This came in by voluntary contributions, namely ___ 39 rigsdaler, 4___14___. The president then encouraged these who were in need of help to make it known. ... The above named account was increased to 57 rigsdaler of which Mr. Bendegs paid 6 rigsdaler and Ahmunsen 51 rigsdaler. One rigsdaler and 3 ___ were spent for a taxi on this occasion, etc."
I read your Wiki on old Danish monetary system, but I'm still fuzzy.
Any thoughts you'd be willing to share?

Photos of coins edit

Hi Godot13,

As you are our specialist in photograph of coins and money in general, I would like to ask you about the existence -or not- in "Commons" of official standards in photographying coins. I think your way to do is good, but some of our friends play a different game, like here. May I have your opinion, please ? Many thanks in advance.--Jebulon (talk) 09:16, 2 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

 • Jebulon - The quality of the images themselves are quite high, but it is the preparation of the final image that is problematic. There are several detractors from the image as a whole: the shadows around the edges of both sides, the placement (the image on the left should be on the right, and the right should be on the left), and again placement (unless this was an error in minting, the face is 180 degree rotated). Like I said, image quality is very high, but post-production work fails... I'm not sure there are specific standards for what needs to be present in an image of currency. In my opinion, it is necessary to show both sides of an object in a single image (for maximum EV). The exception would be if the object only has one side (i.e., some of the banknotes or proofs only have printing on one side). With the present example you've indicated, unless it is marked as an invert error, I would say that the image is actually wrong. --Godot13 (talk) 18:27, 2 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

A barnstar for you! edit

  The Original Barnstar
Hello Godot13,

Thanks for all the wonderful U.S currency images that you have uploaded. Have you ever asked the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago for permission to add a high resolution scanned image of the "1869 $1000 Rainbow Legal Tender" to the collection "Large denominations of U.S. currency? Thanks Hpman2 (talk) 16:02, 30 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Licenses on several files edit

Godot13, I noticed that the licenses on several of your uploaded files are seemingly sort of contradictory. For example, File:HAI-4-Republique d'Haiti-10 Gourdes (1827).jpg, File:VEN-4-United_States_of_Venezuela_(Treasury)-1_peso_(1811,_First_Issue).jpg and File:PHI-A8-El Banco Español-Filipino-10 pesos (1896).jpg, etc. On these files the license is 2013030510011547 ... cc-by-sa-4.0. May I ask you a couple of questions about this license:

 1. Why are you using Self twice to release the file under two different licenses? Are you trying to indicate the licensing status of both the underlying banknote (which normally wouldn't use Self unless you were the actual designer of these banknotes) as well as providing a separate license for your scan (for which you could use Self)?
 2. To which license does the permissionOTRS apply?
 3. Finally, why do you think a copyrgight expiration term of author's life plus 90 years is right for these files, as opposed to any other value? You don't identify the designer of the banks notes or their death date in the summary so I can't see how your determined they've been dead for 90 years.

I'd like to straighten out the licenses for these files, so if you can answer those questions I'll fix the licenses on these files. Thanks. —RP88 (talk) 04:57, 8 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi RP88- The second "self" cc-by-sa-4.0is redundant and is a leftover error on my part. The OTRS license in some of the currency cases is not required, but since these are examples from the National Currency Collection at the Smithsonian it was thought (when I first started uploading) that the OTRS would provide proof that I had access to the objects, and wasn't simply claiming random pieces of currency to be part of the Smithsonian collection. Also, my status as a researcher associate (volunteer) puts me in a grey area regarding imaging work of an "employee" of the Federal Government automatically being in the public domain (another part of the initial rational for including the second "self"). In some cases the number of years chosen as a value is related to the copyright law of the country (when possible, as it pertains to currency). For the first two files, I think it is safe to assume that whomever the artist/engraver was for a note issued in 1827 and 1811 was deceased 90 years. The third (Philippines) could be changed to EU-Anon for the local license since it was issued when they were part of Spain. If I have misunderstood any part of your questions, please let me know. Thanks.--Godot13 (talk) 07:16, 8 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the reply. OK, to be safe I'll assume 70 years for designers with unknown dates of death and update the licenses to something like PD-old-70-1923. I've updated File:HAI-4-Republique d'Haiti-10 Gourdes (1827).jpg. Does that look good to you? —RP88 (talk)
Hi RP88- The template you've removed including both "self" and "Smithsonian Institution" was prepared by OTRS to be added to all of the paper currency files I digitize. I am not comfortable with that being removed without further discussion. Thanks.--Godot13 (talk) 20:41, 8 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry if I misunderstood you. Did the Smithsonian Institution claim that they were co-copyright holders of the scans you made and they agreed to release their copyright interest in these scans under a cc-by-sa-4.0 license? If so, I can correct the licenses. If that is incorrect, I'd appreciate it if you explain a little more about the licensing situation with these files. I appreciate your patience. —RP88 (talk) 21:00, 8 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Alternatively, was it yours and the Smithsonian Institution's intention to release your scans as public domain and the cc-by-sa-4.0 should not be used at all? —RP88 (talk) 16:14, 9 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
RP88- I think we’re talking about some kind of combination of both scenarios. There are many countries with specific PD license tags for currency, and some that only allow a specific date range to be in the PD. There are some countries that specifically forbid the reproduction of currency, regardless of the date of design/issue. I have tried in general to include a country-specific PD or license tag, in addition to the required U.S. required PD tag. I have also been learning as I go along, so there may be some inconsistencies in style along the way. I try to avoid the PD-Art tag unless there is absolutely no other option.
The existing template (self and Smithsonian) is a way to acknowledge that any copyright I might possess (which for scans tends to be very little to none) since I am a volunteer, and any copyright the Smithsonian might possess, since I am a volunteer, would fall into a freely usable license. My understanding for my scans is that they become PD, but any use must acknowledge the National Numismatic Collection (as under permission).--Godot13 (talk) 03:06, 10 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
OK, if your agreement with SI is that any of the digital reproductions created with their cooperation must acknowledge them, then you personally can't release your digital reproductions as PD (even if legally someone else could reuse them as PD under the logic of Bridgeman v. Corel), you have to include a license with an attribution requirement. The appropriate wrapper template for that situation is Licensed-PD-Art which allows you to specify why the underlying depicted object is PD, but specify a license for the digital reproduction that has an attribution requirement. I've updated just File:HAI-4-Republique d'Haiti-10 Gourdes (1827).jpg as an example. Does that look good to you? The resulting license template is complex, but I think it captures everything you want in a supported way. —RP88 (talk) 05:07, 10 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
If you're still uncomfortable with the license at File:HAI-4-Republique d'Haiti-10 Gourdes (1827).jpg, we can step it back to instead use Copyright information, which will be even more generic. —RP88 (talk) 05:18, 10 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
RP88 – For the Haiti file above, I think that would be more appropriate because the country of origin tag is more specific (accurate). (I'm not sure why one would ever want to go with a more generic license, e.g., Copyright information). If the CC license governs attribution then it should probably state the specific attribution required. I don’t see a conflict between the original "Self/Smithsonian" and "CC" tags, just perhaps some redundancy. I have close to a thousand numismatic images (most of them paper currency) uploaded. If this discussion is going to set a precedent on how their license tags are viewed I would like to ping King of Hearts to this discussion as he helped me with the initial OTRS approval and provided the template I have been using for the past 2-3 years.--Godot13 (talk) 06:56, 10 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Sure, using the country license tag is fine (I used a PD-old-N-1923 tag inside the Licensed-PD-Art wrapper template because you originally used a PD-old-N-1923 tag). I am also not particular about the attribution, use whatever you believe to be correct. With regards to the Copyright information wrapper template, I suggested it as a possible alternative to the Licensed-PD-Art wrapper template because I thought that it might be the case you were unhappy with the language of Licensed-PD-Art (the language of Copyright information is much more generic), but that is a moot point if Licensed-PD-Art is OK with you.

At this point what I am trying to do is find a license that you are comfortable with that eliminates the use of Self with an enclosed PD-old tag. This is not a valid use of the Self template since the phrase "author, the copyright holder of this work, hereby publishes it under the following license" is very wrong when the embedded tag is a PD-old tag. It's wrong since author can't be the copyright holder for a work with an expired copyright. If author is actually the copyright holder of a non-expired copyright, and they are using Self with a PD-old tag as a form of PD-self, this is also very wrong since the PD-old tags aren't actually copyright licenses and don't release a copyrighted work into the public domain like PD-self (or even better, Cc0) do.

If King of Hearts is interested, I'm happy to discuss this with him as well. To set your mind at ease, it wasn't my plan to make any kind of sweeping change to the licensing in your files (unless of course you'd actually like me to), the small handful I altered I encountered while processing PD-old-90. —RP88 (talk) 07:38, 10 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

RP88-First, I do appreciate your effort to improve the tagging. The following questions I ask only so I may better understand (not to be difficult). Do you feel that the "self/smithsonian" template should generally be replaced with the Licensed-PD-Art-two? I noticed that you tried a variation with an early Venezuelan banknote that incorporated the Self/Smithsonian template as the CC portion of the Licensed-PD-Art template, is that an acceptable variation for general paper currency use? Would it work, for example, in the Haiti note scenario with the PD-Art-two template? Thanks.--Godot13 (talk) 00:05, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
For paper currency where the currency itself is PD but you prefer to apply a license to your digital reproduction of the currency (e.g. because your agreement with SI includes an attribution requirement) you can use either Licensed-PD-Art or Licensed-PD-Art-two depending on whether or not you are using a single combined PD in source country + US tag (e.g. PD-old-auto-1923) or a two separate tags (e.g. PD-country and PD-1923). It's up to you whether or not you choose to include the Self around the enclosed license. For coinage I'd suggest either Licensed-PD or Copyright information since the PD-Art tags are only appropriate when the original object is two-dimentional. So, the following are an example of a few of the kinds of license tags that I think would be fine. The embedded PD tags are just examples and 've used a placeholder for the attribution and/or author (you're of course free to change the details of authorship or attribution for the digital reproduction):
 •
 •
 •
 •
 •
 •

Very helpful, I will start playing around with these...--Godot13 (talk) 04:00, 12 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
RP88 - Do you have any idea why my template self/Smithsonian is suddenly coming up as an invalid parameter?--Godot13 (talk) 04:53, 14 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
I saw your question over at Self. Basically Self is now reporting an invalid parameter and categorizes the file with a tracking category if Self is used with common PD-old tags, exactly the same way that PD-Art reports an invalid parameter and categorizes the file with a tracking category when used with a non-PD tag. You are not obliged to do anything about this, if you don't want to. If you are interested, you can try this search to find files that are in the Category:Files with invalid parameter in Self template that contain the phrase "Godot13" in the wikitext source. There used to be a few thousand files in Category:Files with invalid parameter in Self template, but most have been addressed. —RP88 (talk) 06:03, 14 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
RP88- I'm actively replacing the invalid parameter files with the licenses discussed above. I wondered if you could help me with something - a template. Right now, the Currency template exists for use on images that are/were negotiable currency (i.e., at some point legal tender). I would like to create a variant of this template to perhaps be named which would be used on images of proofs or specimen currency that were clearly used in the process of designing currency, but which did not themselves have a legal tender value or could not be redeemed. Sometimes proof or specimen notes look identical to issued notes, therefore the possibility (per the existing template) that its use could somehow be restricted may still be a valid point to make. I have probably uploaded some 50+ (conservatively) proof/specimen notes and have several times that amount available to be scanned. If this is something that you can do, perhaps we could work on the wording together? --Godot13 (talk) 02:39, 15 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Sure, happy to help. What text would you change in the existing Currency template? It already says "either completely or in part" and "represents a depiction", which has a lot of wiggle room, so Currency is probably OK on these files (I've seen the Currency template used on a photo of a painting depicting false color versions of currency). However, if you think Currency needs special wording for "specimen" currency that is never distributed to the public, maybe we could add a parameter to the existing template. The reason I'm suggesting using a parameter to the existing template rather than a new template is that currently Currency is translated into ~30 languages, so it would would be better if we could "fallback" to the current text if your alternate text has not been translated into a particular language. —RP88 (talk) 03:11, 15 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Understood RP88, let me think about any extra wording that could be useful. I had been operating under a very strict interpretation of the template, perhaps too strict...--Godot13 (talk) 03:24, 15 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Sure let me know, and we can propose something on its talk page. If I were going to change the template's text, one of the changes I'd make would be to remove the "Even though this file is in the public domain or otherwise not copyrighted" blurb (since there is no reason a particular country couldn't, in theory, have freely-licensed as opposed to PD currency and I've seen that blurb confuse some people into thinking all currency is in the public domain). I'd keep the "its use may be restricted by other legal provisions outside of copyright law" phrase and add the "This tag does not indicate the copyright status of the attached work. A normal copyright tag is still required." line that appears on Trademark or the shorter line "These restrictions are independent of the copyright status" from Insignia. —RP88 (talk) 03:52, 15 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
