First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Interwiki edit

Please only add interwikis to similar pages. Means Categorys to categorys, gallerys to articles, etc. Regards, abf /talk to me/ 18:44, 5 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Happy to do so, except that most French communes that I am working on have an article and no category in Wikipedia, and a category but no gallery in Commons. So it seems reasonable to me to connect Wikipedia French commune articles to Commons French commune categories if it is the only existing combination. Millevache (talk) 18:47, 5 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
I may have overlooked a few cases where there was actually a gallery in Commons. I will make the combination Gallery-article whenever possible. Millevache (talk) 18:49, 5 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
There is very often a "level difference" between articles on wikipedia's and categorys on commons; at the wikpipedia articles one puts normally "Commonscat|...", so the same level difference is acknowledged there; we can do (I do) the reverse at commons. NB. Millevache, thanks for improving my cat's. Havang(nl) (talk) 19:14, 5 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
You're very welcome (although I am not sure which cat's that was). Millevache (talk) 19:17, 5 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

A red link... edit

Hi,

Is is possible to put an end to this red link..., quite unpleasent in a watch list ;)

By the way, do-you know Hot Cat (Special:Preferences > Gadgets > Hot Cat) ? It's a fantastic tool for users who works on categorisation ;)

Cheers.--Bapti 16:36, 20 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the tip.... and I removed the red link. Cheers. Millevache (talk) 16:52, 20 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hotcat edit

You are going fast and good in categorising. Do you know the gadget Hotcat? Go to your Userpage, open preferences and than gadgets. Go down to Tools for categories (read the exemple on the second line Hotcat and) mark that line. Read what is asked about bypassing the browser, save the changes and bypass your browser. Good luck. Havang(nl) (talk) 13:18, 21 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the nice words and for the tip. I cannot manage using Hot Cats. I have selected the Gadget in my preferences (I am using Firefox). When I click on (+) to add a category, several ones may be suggested. If I choose one and click "OK", nothing happens. Any idea how to solve this? Thanks. Millevache (talk) 13:34, 21 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
I don't think it is the browser. The server has problems, nowadays. Try to bypass your browser once you are on the page and than do the categorising. Or try it after the server is OKE again. Havang(nl) (talk) 17:03, 21 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Category:Statue of Jeanne d'Arc in Paris, Rue de Rivoli edit

Hi,

You create this category. But I think the good name would be Category:Statue of Jeanne d'Arc in Paris, Place des Pyramides. You can look this fr:Place des Pyramides in french. If you agree, can you do something? Thank's. CaptainHaddock (talk) 06:55, 26 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

It's not a big deal, I think. The Place des Pyramides is basically part of the Rue de Rivoli, so I believe that both names for the category are fine. If you prefer the one that you have suggested, feel free to go ahead and make a change. Cheers. Millevache (talk) 02:49, 2 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Renaming of category "Buddhism of Thailand" edit

I see that you had the category "Buddhism of Thailand" renamed to Category:Buddhism in Thailand. The newly named category was a "lost category" as you hadn't moved the categories in which "Category:Buddhism of Thailand" had been placed in before it was deleted to the new "Buddhism in Thailand". You also did not remove the redirect that was placed on that page. I have restored these items in the meantime. Please take more care next time you have a category renamed. - Takeaway (talk) 18:44, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

My apologies, I now see that it wasn't you but User:Wknight94 who had moved everything to "Buddhism in Thailand" without taking care of also moving the appropriate categories. His name only showed up after searching the logs of the category that got deleted but your name showed up as the creator of the "Buddhism in Thailand" category so I mistakenly assumed you were the one who changed it all. Sorry again. - Takeaway (talk) 20:23, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Lunar / Chinese New Year edit

[1]: why would "Chinese New Year" be preferred to "Lunar New Year"? It is also celebrated similarly in (at least) Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. - Jmabel ! talk 19:13, 5 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

When I turned the Category:Lunar New Year into a redirect to Category:Chinese New Year, all it contained where pictures of celebrations of Chinese New Year in Hong Kong. I recategorized these pictures to Category:Chinese New Year, Hong Kong and created the redirect. I agree that this redirect is restrictive. Feel free to change the redirect or the details of the Category:Lunar New Year as you think is appropriate. Millevache (talk) 14:34, 6 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
I have reverted my edit of Category:Lunar New Year to its original version, but for the reason that I have mentioned above, the category is now empty. Millevache (talk) 14:37, 6 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:Marymount Secondary School 2.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Marymount Secondary School 2.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Bonjour Millevache,

Thanks for uploading File:JALManila.JPG. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Thanks for uploading File:Lau Yam Fat Vincent.png.

Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Lau Yam Fat Vincent.png) and the above demanded information in your request.

@Magog the Ogre: Hi, you have tagged a number of files that I have transfered from en:Wikipedia to Commons using "for the common good". All of these files had been previously flagged by a bot for transfer to Commons. I understand that the problem is that the name of the author was not mentioned on the original file. I had assumed that the author was the uploader (the uploads date back to 2005). The uploader account has not been active since 2009. Would it be acceptable to assume that the author is the same as the uploader, and keep the files? Could you pick an example and see if there is enough information to fix the problem, so that the deletion request can be lifted? If you tell me on one example what needs to be done, I can do the work on the other files. Thank you. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 16:21, 18 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I was wondering why this file is 5.4 MB in size, yet it does not have all the parameters of metadata including the camera, ISO, or even the exact date when the file was created. Was the file compressed before uploading?

I have remove the file details before uploading it using the Windows function "create a copy with all possible properties removed". Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 20:15, 20 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Still, quite a bit of info remains: click on "Show extended details" in the Metadata section. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 20:17, 20 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Any good reason to do that? I do not see any issues with keeping details.

@ sign and informal abbreviations in category names edit

Hi. Please do not use the @ sign as an abbreviation for the word "at" in category names as the @ sign is not used in formal English, and it makes the category names less accessible. Also, please do not use informal abbreviations for institutions such as "CityU" for the City University of Hong Kong as this makes it more difficult for users to find the pictures they want, or they may find pictures from the wrong CityU. Important message for file movers edit

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Wellington Street, Hong Kong edit

Photos that are already in the category "2019 in Wellington Street, Hong Kong" do not need to also be in the category "Wellington Street, Hong Kong". You are overcategorizing when you do that. That is no different that putting something in the category "2019 in Hong Kong" and in the category "Hong Kong". --Mjrmtg (talk) 11:54, 27 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

 • I don't think that it's overcategorizing (at least in the case of pictures of streets in Hong Kong). Categories for dates, especially for pictures of Hong Kong that I know best, are generally more a nuisance than anything useful. Most of them are very sloppily populated, contain things that are not related to the street (in this case), and make it difficult to find items that are actually in the street. There was a discussion about the "madness" (as it was called then) of the explosion of categories for dates in Hong Kong (going down to categories by months for many things) and the agreement was to continue to populate the main categories (Wellington Street in this case) and to consider the "date category" as a non competing addition. That's what I am following in my categorization of most Hong Kong-related topics. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 12:02, 27 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Category:Scenic View edit

Hello Underwaterbuffalo, you created this category. Could you think about a better name and move it? Category:Scenic View (Hong Kong housing estate) or similar would be much better, because "scenic view" is a really broad term and several images were wrongly put into the category. Please tag Category:Scenic View for deletion afterwards (no redirect to the new category). Thanks --2003:E5:371E:7D00:DC2A:3A5A:ADE5:B561 20:40, 6 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. You are right. I have moved the pictures to Category:Scenic View (Hong Kong housing estate). Category:Scenic View is now a redirect but it can be turned into a disambiguation page if needed. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 07:17, 8 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

File:1899-04-16 Tai Po, New Territories, Hong Kong, flag hoisting after new treaty.jpg edit

Hello, there is a problem with the file mentioned above. This does not show the flag hoisting ceremony, but the "Meeting between Governor Henry Blake and the gentry and elders of the New Territories communities, Tai Po Market (大埔墟), New Territories, Hong Kong". This took place on 1899/08/02. The source is The UK National Archives, also shown on the website of the University of Bristol (https://www.hpcbristol.net/visual/na16-044). Would you please correct the entry. Thanks. --Ion Tichy (talk) 15:13, 13 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

I have corrected it. It is most likely that the picture is part of a set showing the 1899/08/02 meeting, although several sites across the internet date pictures of the set to April 1899. The renamed picture is here. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 13:20, 15 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. Indeed, there is a lot of incorrect assignments of similar photos to the flag-raising from April 1899 (Have found a painting of it only (https://www.amo.gov.hk/form/OTPPS-HIA.pdf, page 13)). I have added comments to many of the National Archives' photos on Flickr. --Ion Tichy (talk) 14:55, 17 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Lai Afong, Hong Kong panorama, c1880.JPG edit

The date of this photo is definetely incorrect, it is c. 1895 instead of 1880 (please see my remarks in the file). Could you please change the name of this file (read: Lai Afong, Hong Kong panorama,c1895)--Ion Tichy (talk) 20:44, 12 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

I have made the change. The file is now at File:Lai Afong, Hong Kong panorama, c1895.jpg. The date is likely a bit later than 1895, since the second generation of the Hong Kong Club Building was built between 1895 and 1897. It looks quite complete on the picture, which would be then more likely have been taken in or after 1896. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 04:00, 13 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Bundesarchiv images edit

Please note that Bundesarchiv images in Category:Unidentified locations in China are not taken in Qingdao (Tsingtau). Some of them might be taken in other Northern Chinese cities while others are obviously from tropical regions. Photos probably taken in Qingdao but not yet identified can be categorized into Category:Unidentified locations in Qingdao.——StefanTsingtauer (talk) 02:06, 13 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the clarification. I have now added the category Category:Unidentified locations in Qingdao to the 28 images that I had moved from Category:Unidentified locations in China to Category:Images of Tsingtau. I hope that's fine. I can revert or further modify if needed. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 03:49, 13 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'd say it would be better if those files were moved back to Category:Unidentified locations in China since they are obviously not taken in Qingdao (I've seen thousands of photos and other materials of Qingdao during German occupation. Buildings, street scene, gardens and tropical scenery like that in those photos were impossible to be seen in Qingdao in that period). I guess Category:Unidentified locations in Qingdao is for those which were possibly taken somewhere in Qingdao. Thank you. ——StefanTsingtauer (talk) 07:31, 14 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
I understand that. I have reverted my earlier edits. All 28 pictures are now re-categorized as Category:Unidentified locations in China. I got to know how complicated Hong Kong is by trying to give his photos proper categories. Just recently he has decided to do this himself. (He is fascinated by Hong Kong, as I have become also, but the categories are challenging.)

Thank you for your message. Yes I have come across some of the photographs of User:LN9267. As you may have noticed, I have done a lot of categorization of Hong Kong pictures. Happy to discuss here if you have questions. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 05:52, 29 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Also, I do wonder about this Krok6kola (talk) 23:36, 28 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Macau has much less coverage than Hong Kong on Commons. You can start here and explore the related Commons cateopries. Most of the buildings in the list seem to be covered. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 05:52, 29 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for answering and for the link. Even User:LN9267 said he has a hard time with Macau. Yes, I have noticed your categorization work! Was it you who set up all the categories for transportation stations, exit and entrances, concourses, etc? Those categories made it easy for me to follow for those photographs (by LN9267) without categories. I even started some categories myself awhile ago, perhaps about ferries, escalators, "tram interiors" and shops. (I hope I did not mess anything up.) Hong Kong is fascinating. It is easy to get lost mentally among all the places and their nuances and become obsessed. Krok6kola (talk) 23:28, 29 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for you work. Don't worry about messing up: you may simply notice someone reverting your edit (hopefully with an explanation) if you do. I have only created some of the categories for transportation and transportation infrastructure, although I have created quite a few of the categories for streets and roads in Hong Kong.
You may know them already, but here are 2 links that may be helpful:
1. GeoInfo Map [3]. Very comprehensive and more detailed than Google maps
2. District boundaries maps [4]. Many items related to Hong Kong are categorized by district. Sometimes it can be useful look at the maps to figure out where exactly the district boundary is located. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 17:34, 30 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Also, LN9267 states specific places in his photographs, e.g. "This photo was taken in Cotai". I always tried to follow that, but I notice that this is not followed generally. See File:MW-50-13 The Parisian Macao and The Lononer Macao to Border Gate shuttle bus 30-01-2023.jpg. Is this because that location is irrelevant for the pink bus in the photo? Thanks, Krok6kola (talk) 23:52, 29 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
This photo is already in Category:The Parisian Macao and Category:The Londoner Macao. That's enough to indicate the location. The categories Category:Cotai Strip or Category:Cotai should not be added because that would be redundant and would be over-categorization. What could be added here is the category for the street, which is probably Category:Estrada do lstmo, Macau, but I cannot confirm since Google Street View doesn't have recent pictures for this location. Adding the street would not be over-categorization, since a location at The Parisian Macao or The Londoner Macao does not necessarily imply that the location is also Estrada do lstmo, Macau. Thanks for the info. I haven't noticed any reversions, but then I am a very conservative (rather obsessive) in categorization. Those maps you suggested above are great and give wonderful views of Hong Kong. I will definitely figure out how to use it. Your explanation for Cotai shows how much I don't know about Hong Kong; I've never heard of it. Krok6kola (talk) 18:09, 30 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Categories edit

I have made several new categories in Macau using the website of the Government of China for the names. Perhaps you could clean them up, if you are willing. You do a great job on categories. I am confident that these exist.

I've done a few more, using the same reasoning, but am too tired now to list them. They are under Category:Museums in Macau. These are all photographs of LN9267, whose photos just languish if someone doesn't at least try to give them categories. Hope my doing this is ok. Krok6kola (talk) 23:16, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

According to the website[5], The Former Chong Sai Pharmacy "was one of the first pharmacies and clinics recorded in Macao's history with western medical services, operated by a Chinese doctor" and was restored by Macao S.A.R. Krok6kola (talk) 23:28, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Great job! I will look at these categories and try to help. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 19:12, 21 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

I found these by accident. Krok6kola (talk) 21:30, 21 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Well done. Airside is the name of a new shopping mall and office complex in Hong Kong. I suppose that the "Air" part of the name is a reference to the former Kai Tak Airport that was in the vicinity. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 09:03, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes. When I brought it to LN9267's attention, he categorized them, saying "AIRSIDE is a new shopping mall and office in Kai Tak. The name base on this place was a airport, so have some about Kai Tak Airport history exhibition. Kai Tak Airport stop operation in 1998, then have a new airport in Chek Lap Kok open in 1998 to replace Kai Tak Airport." Krok6kola (talk) 18:42, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

New question edit

I created a category based on Kong airport’s 11 Skies complex and now I am having big second thoughts. The category is Category:11 Skies complex. Will you help me out here and make a category that you think is the right for these images? Krok6kola (talk) 03:04, 27 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

I think I should stop. I changed the name but it needs fixing. Very sorry to screw up like this. Too tired to be editing and I should know when to stop. Krok6kola (talk) 03:31, 27 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
No problem. You did a great job. I have added a few details and connected the category to Wikidata. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 06:26, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks so much! Krok6kola (talk) 18:44, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Another question edit

Do you know what this image is: File:Entrence of SkyPoint.jpg? I put it in the only category I could find that seemed (perhaps) relevant. Thanks! Krok6kola (talk) 18:10, 26 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

It is in Australia. I have fixed it. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 15:04, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Macau edit

Just so you know, when I find old images without a category but I can see they are Macau, I just stick them in the "Macau" category. I do see people remove images now and then from there. Hopefully my actions are helpful. Krok6kola (talk) 21:23, 8 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Also, I see with irritation that user LN9267 has stopped putting his images in categories, especially the ones from Macau. He uploads so many and they are wonderful photographs. Krok6kola (talk) 21:32, 8 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
