Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~. To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg. You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account. There are several tools to upload files. Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful. Made a mistake? Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it. Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Since you are a newbie, I'm taking the liberty of pointing out the policy at COM:OVERCAT. It applies to this file because Category:Brick Presbyterian Church, Manhattan belongs to Category:Churches in Manhattan, New York City, which belongs to Category:Buildings in Manhattan, New York City. So the property categorization is Category:Brick Presbyterian Church, Manhattan, without either of the others. Thanks, I have been trying to do a bit of sorting within and . Is there a discussion archived about fixing all those categories which have Gothic Revival spelled as Gothic revival? If so, how would I search for it? If not, how do I start a discussion? I am not knowledgeable enough yet to even ascertain whether or not this is a trivial issue and/or a can of worms.Upstatepolyglot (talk) 01:57, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

A search on "Commons:Categories for discussion/Gothic Revival" gives as the top result Commons:Categories for discussion/2012/01/Revival architectural styles. Not in UES?

Hi, it's nice to see someone working to straighten our sometimes tangled or overcrowded NYC categories. However, the other day you moved a great many pictures out of Category:Upper East Side. If you have reason to believe all those buildings are in other parts of Manhattan, perhaps you should put them in the correct neighborhood category instead of delocalizing them. I moved them to a new category Category:Buildings in the Upper East Side, New York City, which is nested both within Category: Upper East Side and within Category:Buildings in Manhattan, New York City. Is that better? They are now localized again. I am new at this so I appreciate any suggestions.Upstatepolyglot (talk) 02:51, 20 December 2013 (UTC)

Sure; only a relatively few of us are cat wranglers and we mostly stick to our own particular topic or territory and, umm, we don't always communicate our intentions and preferences as we should. So, conventions and customs are picked up by experience and especially by whining and bullying and are not properly codified in places like Commons:Categories. To avoid upsetting others, sometimes I limit a Cat-a-lot run to a dozen pictures, and wait several hours for someone to squawk before my next run. Of course, this time I waited more than a day before squawking, so that kind of caution wouldn't have worked anyway.

Perhaps we should mark "Buildings in" categories with Template:MetaCat since separating the buildings from the other features of an urban area doesn't do a lot of good unless they are also diffused to topical cats like high-rise or residential or religious or by color or style or decade built, or whatever. But we don't and I haven't thought of pushing the idea until this minute. I'll get some sleep and maybe figure out why it's a bad idea or just forget it.

Where was I going when I ran off the track? Anyway, yes, sure things will go a bit awry and feathers will get ruffled but we're all pulling the same sled; umm, no I used that metaphor half a day ago. We're all on the same team and glad to have a new friend even if we have to jockey a little to make it all fit. Oh, a little bragging. Notice that the majority of the pix you moved have "jeh" in the filename? Few Commonsers will judge me the most skillful Wikiphotographer in town, but some might count me among the busiest. I was hoping to further sort within the new Buildings of the UES category by function (apartment buildings,embassies, etc.) and to add even more buildings as I find them. I haven't yet tried to create a metacat. I will read up on the procedure and give it a try, so watch that page and see how I make out! I've been using the preview button in editing mode to see how the pages are made and that has been helping a lot.

I myself am interested generally in the categories of buildings by style and buildings by function; I don't understand the rationale for a lot of the category tree structure within Category:Architecture, and the United States categories don't relate well to categories in other countries. I thought Category:Saltbox architecture was for an American vernacular style, but now that I see all those half-timbered German buildings in that category, I am now confused -I don't think this category was meant for them. I am also quite bothered by the miscapitalization of Revival as revival. This inconsistency in category naming has been perpetuated, and multiplied to such an extent, it now seems that there are too many categories to repair. It goes against my grain to create a category that has such an obvious error in the name, but I keep my eye on the big picture and hope that someday it will be fixed.

In particular, a cat wrangler. Ah, international consistency. Too darn many wranglers are only concerned with their own little town, pay no attention to their whole large country much less the world, and put in the first word that pops into their parochial head. Thus we get Borough trees with some branches specified as NYC and some not, and neighborhood trees with some branches specified as in Brooklyn and some in NYC or maybe just NY.

We have two prolific local cat wranglers, or anyway two thus far have produced plentiful, neat, yet imaginative work that I greatly admire and appreciate. User:DanTD mostly does transport and infrastructure, which means handling a great many of my pictures. User:Beyond My Ken is more the architectural wrangler, and displays great patience with NYC's vague and overlapping neighborhoods. I'm always pleased to see these two fixing things, sometimes straightening matters that my own obtuseness snarled. And yeah, sometimes I don't quite like their approach to some question, philosophically anyway, but generally one or another of us finally sees the light, or at least shows the grace to surrender when the other is being unreasonable about a trifle.

Anyway, since right at the beginning you're trying to find a big picture that makes sense, there's reason to hope for splendid results. You might want to leave notes in parental cat talk pages to establish communication and coordination with other wranglers of similar interests, and of course watchlist all Village Pumps, Help pages and anything else that might turn out relevant. I have lost interest in MetaCat templates on grounds of being too busy. Pedaling the length of Brooklyn tomorrow night with a big biker gang to look at Christmas lights in Dyker Heights, for one thing. I would like to let others do cat work and put my time into snapping and processing pictures, at least until better photographers (they are many in NYC) start snapping up my Outer Boro targets before I get to them. Cats

"1800s xxxx architecture in xxxx" categories are about the decade from 1800 to 1809, on the pattern of "1820s xxxxx architecture in xxxx", which covers the decade from 1820 to 1929. They are not the equivalent of "19th century architecture", which covers the entire century, from 1800 to 1899. Beyond My Ken (talk) 05:40, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

Category:Unsorted files from Tim & Sherrie Vermande Flickr stream

Category:Unsorted files from Tim & Sherrie Vermande Flickr stream has a prominent banner at the top explaining the curation needed for the files, which includes descriptions, specific categories, and filenames? Why did you move hundreds of files from that category to the very broad Category:Trains without performing any additional curation? Pi.1415926535 (talk) 18:55, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
