Lac de Dera Yunco edit

Scope:
Lac de Dera Yunco
Reason:
One of the numerous lakes above Barèges (French Pyrénées) and also one of the most pleasant spots in this preserved area. -- JLPC (talk)
  •   Comment It is a nice photo, but I am not fully convinced that it illustrates the subject well. For instance, the butterfly-like shape of the lake is not apparent. There is another file in the category, which is also good, and perhaps an equally good illustration of the scope, albeit with emphasis on other aspects, but I am not convinced that this alternative illustrates the subject well either. Googling for the lake, I found this photo, taken from some distance, looking down at the lake. I think such a type of photo give a more complete idea of the scope. You see the lake, its shape, the vegetation on part of the perimeter and the the environment in which the lake is situated. --Slaunger (talk) 21:37, 28 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi, Slaunger and thanks for your review but, in fact, I'm not sure you're right ! I took my photo last year, on a sunny day, above Barèges, and I saw five lakes during this walk. I had some problems, when I came back, not to mistake the different names (I had, moreover, a lot of photos from different walks). I used the Internet, and Google Earth and I noticed that some photographers were wrong because they called Lac de Dera Yunco another lake : the White lake (i.e. Le Lac Blanc for me !). This was one year ago so, this morning, I searched again and I found three sites justifying my opinion : the buttefly-shaped lake is not the Lac de Dera Yunco but the Lac Blanc. Here are my links : [1], [2], and Lac Blanc). The fourth clue is given by Google Earth or by the Wikipedia geocoding tool we use for our photos : the buttefly is the Lac Blanc, Just above the Lac dets Coubous and the Lac de Dera Yunco. -- Please have a look at my links and at Google Earth, I think you'll be convinced I'm not wrong ! If you're not, I'll make some other investigations on the spot next week because I'm going to Barèges again for a few days ! -- Best regards. -- JLPC (talk) 08:05, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • You are certainly right that I was wrong about the butterfly shape  . The photo I referred to is indeed the nearby Le Lac Blanc as you mention. Thank you for pointing that out with good references. So from what I see on Google maps, Lac de Dera Yunco is a quite small lake with more shallow waters, which is also apparent in the nominated photo. What I am still uncertain about is what makes the lake different from other lakes and how to illustrate that? Maybe you could help me pinpoint one or more features in the photo with some characteristics which are specific for Lac de de Dera Yunco? Is it the large dice-like nearby rocks, the vegetation, the landscape? The point I am addressing here is not unique for this lake but actually for several VICs I have seen of rivers, lakes and other landscape features where it is hard for me to find one or more specific indicators for the specific scope. --Slaunger (talk) 12:29, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I sometimes crop, straighten or lighten my photos (on another page) when someone asks me to do so : Wikipedia is a collective work. But I've really nothing to say about my photos. I thought this one could give a good idea of the subject, and a better idea than the other picture in the scope (until a better one is uploaded, of course). -- I'm sure your review is fair, so I'll accept fairly your advice, without any spite, if you consider this photo has to be declined. Frankly. Best regards. --JLPC (talk) 20:32, 29 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes, that helped, thanks. OK, I have just spend 15 minutes or so playing around with Google Earth in 3D placing myself at the location of the camera and "looking around". I agree that with the landmark pics in the background, the shallow water, the vegetation, and the rocks nearby this is indeed a good illustration of the scope, and also a better illustration than the other photo in the category, which does not show as distinct characters of the surroundings. Since you are going there soon again, you might want to have a go at trying to photograph it from a higher altitude, preferably a photo where you look down on the lake and can capture its entire surface such that the full perimeter of the lake can be seen. Then you might be able to outcompete your (probably) soon to become VI with an even better one.   --Slaunger (talk) 20:49, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
