Description |
English: 'Greenwich Hospital. The Painted Hall' Plate 97 in vol 3 of Ackermann's 'Microcosm of London' (3 vols, 1808-11), drawn and etched by Rowlandson (who did the figures) and Pugin, aquatint by Bluck. The view is looking west from the Upper Hall towards the Lower Hall, with Nelson's funeral car in stern view on the right. This was brought back to Greenwich after his funeral on 9 January 1806 and remained on display in the Hall until dismantled as decayed in about 1826. Its figurehead survives in the collection and one or two of the metal letters from round the canopy. |
