Summary edit

Author
Admiral Sir Edward Gennys Fanshawe
Description
English: 'Hogland, Augt 24th 1855' [Finland]

No. 4 in Fanshawe's Baltic and later album, 1843 - 83. Fold-out panoramic drawing on two joined sheets, the right one stuck down on the album page, which is captioned by the artist below the image, as title.

Hogland Island lies in the Gulf of Finland, due south of Kotka, and between Tallin and St Petersburg on the southern (Russian) side. In 1788 it was the site of a notable naval battle in the Russo-Swedish War. Fanshawe here shows the settlement, his closer view of the church being PAI4675. The ships on the right are his own steam corvette 'Cossack' on the left and probably the larger 'Amphion' of his friend and contemporary, Captain Astley Cooper Key. The viewpoint is probably north towards the Finnish coast. The identity of the animal in the right foreground is uncertain but, if a dog, may be Fanshawe's.
