Description
English: 'The Evening Hymn'

'The Evening Hymn' by G.A. Periam after Henry Richter.

It may relate to a story of the same name. Two young women are depicted in flowing gowns, the younger with ringlets and a musical instrument (possibly a lute), the older with her head covered. They sit on chairs outside below an open window. The younger woman has her right foot on a footstool and is playing (possibly also singing) to the older woman. The older woman sits with a closed book on her lap, her hands resting on the book. Around them is a neat country, possibly garden scene.

This print is published by the firm Smith, Elder & Co. The brother of Margaret Brodie Herschel (nee Stewart), Peter Stewart worked for Smith, Elder & Co as a printer.
