Description
English: (Recto) Sketch of ships 'steaming and towing' in the strait between between Andro (Andros) and Euboea in the Aegean, September 1852; (Verso) profile views of Cape Matapan, 13 September, and Cape Grosso, 13 October 1852, Greece

No. 25 of 36 (PAI0849 - PAI0884).

(Recto) This unfinished drawing is inscribed lower left, 'Steaming and towing - / Archipellago - / Sept 1852', and along the bottom: 'Andro' (the island of Andros), 'Trafalgar', 'Bellerophon', 'Tiger' (the twin-funnelled paddler towing the other two ships); 'Firebrand' (paddler, towing) 'Albion' and 'Britannia / (Flag)'. The last flies the flag of Rear-Admiral James Dundas at the mizzen. The land on the right is also identified as 'Negropont' (i.e. Euboea), which shows that the ships are heading south-east towards Cape Sounion and Athens in the Doro or Kafireus Strait, the latter being the modern Greek name. The direction suggests they had sailed from the Turkish coast near Smyrna; see PAI0874.

(Verso) Two watercolour studies, one above the other separated by a ruled pencil line. Both are inscribed top left of the respective drawing. Above ‘Cape Matapan - / Sept- 13th 52’, and below ‘Cape Grosso / Oct 13th 52’. The sun is setting over the low promontrory of Cape Matapan, seen from the east. Cape Grosso appears like a dun-coloured lion’s paw jutting seaward from the right, with blue mountains of the adjacent coast rising behind. Both these capes are on the central promontory of Laconia, the Greek Peloponnese. Matapan is the extreme southern point: Grosso is on the western side.
