threatened with depri-vation of office should they consecrate churcheswithout relics, a decree that holds good in theRoman Catholic Church to-day. When the stone altar was displaced by the com-munion table, the latter generally occupied theposition at the eastern end of the cliancel vacatedby the former, and this was the direction of theInjunctions (see Lansdowne MSS. 8, f. i6, BritishMuseum), but there was no uniformity.
