would leave thematter entirely in Mr. Douglass hands to indicate tohim any moment before or after trial that he wishedhis son pardoned, and that a pardon would be issuedwithout any conditions whatever. Mr. Douglass car-ried this letter in his pocket, never told of it at thetime, secured able counsel for his son, and sat throughthe trial, which resulted in his sons conviction. Heacknowledged the letter to President Grant after^vard,and said that his son protested his innocence, and manyof his friends insisted that his arrest was due to racialprejudice, but that he had seen that he had a fair trialand that he had been justly convicted; that when histerm of confinement was over he would do all in hispowder to help him to reform and become a useful citi-zen, but under the circumstances he did not think heought to be pardoned at that time. This son was by Mr. Douglass first wife and, unlikehis father, w^as very dark. I think these two instancesshow Mr. Douglass true nobility of character.

Hackett, the famous comedian, and nevermissed an opportunity to see him play. Mr. Hackettcame to Washington a number of times during thewar, and I can see him now, as I saw him then, as SirJohn Falstaff in the Merry Wives of Windsor, withhis short, fat form, encased in large top boots, leatherntrousers and doublet, gauntlet gloves, and sword andbelt with a large buckle, broad-brimmed slouch hatwith ostrich feathers and the brim turned up in frontshowing a most remarkable countenance as made up,leering eyes, surmounted by shaggy white eyebrows,a weeks growth of stubby white beard upon a back-ground of complexion almost deep crimson; his largepursing mouth, with rasping, crackling voice, boast-fully recounting his prowess and conquests in love andwar.
