ed the way through theplantation, which is thickly covered with sugar cane,cocoa-nut, banana and bread-fruit trees, and many otherkinds of trees, among them being the cocoa beantree, the first we have seen of this tree. The cocoa-beansgrow in pods, which contain several beans. They haveonly been planted a few years, and are just beginning tobear fruit. These trees are about the size of a peachtree and have leaves eight or ten inches long, light greencolor. Our path led us along a clear bubbling mountainbrook through a regular jungle of tropical vegetation. Wewere obliged to cross the brook half a dozen times oncobble stones, and most of us slipped off the stones andwet our white shoes, but the weather was so warm thatthere was no danger of taking cold. We were surrounded by thetropical forest and jungle, many large and small trees, alsoferns growing in every possible place where they couldcatch hold. On nearly every tall tree, there would be aa bunch or more of these beautiful ferns. Wherever a limbwas broken off or a knot hole appeared, a bunch of fernswould immediately begin to grow, appearing much like alarge birds nest located fifty feet above the earth. An awning was spread and under it was placed ourlunch, which had been brought from the steamer. Thewhole company sat on the ground, the Captain at the headof the line, with Mrs. Judge Gurr at his side, and the nativegirls next. We were very tired after our long walk andenjoyed the lunch, washed down with plenty of ginger aleand clear, cool spring water. After lunch, the next thing in order was a swim in thepool.
