This assembly didthereuppon lovingly accept of the said offer of £500. And Mr.Gray herein Court did enter into Bond for the payment of £500uppon the 24th day of August which shall be A.D. 1636. Established almshouses at Taunton, the government of whichhe left to the Company, but on account of the distance and forother reasons the trust was declined. GRAYS MONUMENT. Laus Deo. This charitable work is foundedby Robert Graye of the cittie of London, esquier,borne in this town in the house adjoining hereuntowho in his life-time doth erect it for tenn pooreaged syngle women; and for their competent live-lihood and daylie prayers in the same, providedsufficient maintenance for the same. 1635. In the Chapel is a very inferior copy of this portrait, and alsoa stone slab with the following inscription: D.O.M. To the Glory of God and Honor ofHis Blessed Name is this Sacred Oratory andHospitall consecrated by Robert Gray Esq: bornein this town. Citizen and Marchantaylor andSheriff Elect of London.1 In thankful acknowledg-ing Gods great and gracious mercies conferd onhim, this Memorial in all humblenes is hereerected.
