at many of the desirable camping places about thelakes and on the streams they had tepee-poles set up which theyleft permanently in place, so that on arrival ,at any! of thesepermanent camping places, all they would have to do would beto spread their tepees on the framework of poles already inplace. There were several of these perm.anent camps found bythe iirst settlers in 1857. One on the southeast of Loon Lake,one in Marble Grrove west of Spirit Lake, one in OkobojiGrove near the old site of the Mattock cabin, one in the grovesouth of Millers Bay, and, as before stated, one in the Drewor ^Nicholson Grove, southeast of Silver Lake. At each of theseseveral places there were poles set up for spreading from sixto nine tepees. After the Indians left and before the white settlers came.Silver Lake was a favorite camping ground for trappers. In addition to tli(;i^e whomade trapping a reglilar bnsiness, most of the settlers had moreor less traps which they tended at the proper season, and thefnr taken proved an imjwrtant factor in tiding oyer many afamily of the early pioneers nntil snch times as the originalclaim could be converted into a farm and made to produce suf-ficient for the family support. Silver Lake was originally attached to Lakeville townshipand was set apart from it in 1872. The first school in the town-ship was before it Avas so set off, or at least before the new or-ganization was completed. The first teacher was Miss LouiseJ\Iiddleton of Lakeville, who was employed by the Lakevilleschool officers. The first term w.as in the house of C. B. Knox.His house was a one room affair, possibly about sixteen bytwenty feet, and one st(irv high, which liad to answer for kitch-en, living room and school room alternately.
