th windows a colonnelli vi^hichin his day were springing up on all hands in Siena. Moreover, there are few worksthat are more Gothic in feeling than Mr. Bensons Temptation. It has just thesame qualities that we find in Lorenzo Monacos drawings of the Journey of theMagi and the Visitation. In its eerie mysticism, in its exuberant imaginativepower, it recalls to us the reliefs executed by the nameless sculptors of the greatFrench and German cathedrals. And northern and Gothic as is the architecture inthe cities of the world, it is not more Gothic or northern than that near relativeof the devil of the northern sculptors, Duccios Satan. 1 Vasari ; Baldinucci, u.s., iv., p. 125.Milanesi, Delia Vera MA di Guido, etc., u.s., p. 9; Notes to Vasari, ii.,p. 20 ; and Doc.
