If you can bear favorable witness concerningtheir lives, it is well, and we can baptize them withthe greater assurance; but if you have any complaintsto bring against them, we will not do it. This isthe first recorded instance of a practice honored bythe Brethren to this day. It evidently dates to thebeginning in Germany. This is the beginning of thechurch in Lancaster County. Since the distancewas so great, the Germantown members advisedthese to select a preacher and form a separate congre-gation. Conrad Beissel was chosen. Then the kissof peace was given and the Brethren returned toGermantown. From 1722 to 1732 the meetings were held in thehomes of the members—generally at Beckers,Gomorrys, Gantzs, Trauts, or Kalckglassers.
