arginate,and of ordinary length; bill black, yellow at the baseof the lower, and on the edges of the upper mandible.Iris light brown; feet yellowish brown, the underparts yellow. The general colour of the upper partsis dull olivaceous, lighter behind. The eye is encircledwith greyish white, of which colour also are the tipsof the wing coverts; quills and tail duskj^, edgedwith greenish yellow; the silky feathers of the crownof the head vermilion. The under parts greyish white. 114 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET. Length four inches and a quarter; extent of wings sixinches; bill one-third of an inch; tarsus three-fourthsof an inch. The adult female in summer plumage resembles themale, but the tints are in general duller, especiallythe greenish yelloAV of the wings. Figured by Audubon and Wilson. Since the above was in type I have been informedby the Rev. H. B. Tristram, that he has a specimen ofthis bird which he had in the flesh, and which waskilled by a Durham pitman in 1852, in BranspethWoods.

Peet robust, three toes infront and one behind, the exterior joined at its base to themiddle toe; the claw of the hind toe by much the longestand the most curved.
