Theegg from which my figure is taken was also kindlysent me by the same gentleman, who remarks, Thisegg is very variable, though not so much so as that ofA. arhoreus. Some of my specimens approach those of 178 TAWNY PIPIT. the Pied Wag-tail; in others the russet spots are as lar^e^,thick, and bright, as in Sylvia galactodes,. which eggthis variety exactly resembles. Family AULAUDIDyE. fBonaparte.J Genus Alauda. f Linnceus.J Generic Characters.—Beak sub-conic, mandibles of equallength, the upper one convex, and more or less curved orstraight. JSTostrils basal ovoid, covered by small feathers directlyforwards. Feet.—Three toes in front, one behind, the middlejoined at its base, with exterior claw of hinder toe straight,or nearly so, and generally longer than the toe. Wings.—Firstquill obsolete, or nearly so, the second shorter than the third,which is the longest; two of the secondaries as long as theprimaries.
