rest of crop, abdomen, flanks, and W m PUEPLE WATEKnEZ^\ thiglis bluish black; under tail coverts white; undertail feathers brown. Beak and frontal plate red; feetand legs pink; iris red. The young of the year, after the first moult, have,according to Degland, the occiput and nape yellowishbrown; upper parts brown ash, shaded here and therewith indigo blue; cheeks and neck ash, washed infront with turquoise blue; crop and abdomen ash,shaded v/ith brown on the flanks, with whitish on theunder tail coverts, thighs, and lower part of abdomen;wings dark indigo blue, with the extremity of thecoverts bordered with whitish; feet green russet. Beforethe first moult there is no blue in the plumage. My figure is taken from a specimen kindly sent meby Mr. Tristram, marked Algiers, Dec, 1855. It has also been figured by Brisson, Orn., vol. v, pi.42, fig. 1; Bufibn, pi. enl. 810, under the name ofTaleve de Madagascar; Roux, Ornith. Family RALLID^. fBonaparte.J Genus Fulica. fLinncBus.J Generic Characters.—Beak middle-sized, strong, ,straight,conic, compressed at its base, broader than thick; uppermandible dilated into a frontal plate at its base; point ofbeak laterally compressed; upper mandible slightly longer thanthe lower; nostrils lateral, in the middle of the beak, piercedlongitudinally, half closed by a membrane which conceals thewidest part. Legs long, moderately robust, naked above theknee; three toes in front and one behind; all the toes long,and bordered on each side by crescentic membranous festoons;claws long and very sharp-pointed.
