in Steubenville in 1814, whichled to the establishment of various man-ufactories in the place. It now con-tains five of woollen, one of paper, oneof cotton, one of iron, and two of glass,besides others ; and in the neighbor-hood are seven copperas manufactories.All these employ between eight hun-dred and one thousand hands, and con-sume more than a million bushels ofcoal annually. This important kind offuel is derived from mines at a shortdistance from the town. The popula-tion, in 1810, was 800 ; in 1820, 2,479 ;in 1830, 2,964; in 1840, 4,247; and in1848, about 8,000. Steubenville contains five publicschools and four select ones, besidesa male and a female seminary. The for-mer is named Grove academy, and is aflourishing institution, containing abouteighty pupils. The latter, situated onthe bank of the Ohio, was commenced in1829, at an expense of nearly $40,000,has ten or twelve teachers, and aboutone hundred and fifty pupils.
