000. The first settlement was madein the year 1826. Stage-coaches godaily to Chicago, and three times aweek to several other places. In 1846the arrivals of steamboats were threehundred and thirty-three, amounting tofiftv-eiijht thousand, five hundred andseventy-five tons. The exports, in 1846, were as follows :Lead, 672.620 pigs, worth §2,225,000 ;copper, §22,000 ; lumber, §100,000 ;hides,S14,S00; wheat, 150,000 bushels. Rock Island City is a small town onthe Mississippi river, a little above themouth of Rock river. The populationis now about 1,000. Bki.i.rvim.f,, fourteen miles fi*om St.Louis, is the seat of justice tor St. Claircounty, and contains three large flour-mills, and various other manufactories.One half of the population of the townand county are industrious Germans.The number of inhabitants was 1,207 in1840. and is now about 2,800.
