Theground is seventy-five feet above low-water mark, and the streets cross atright angles, giving a favorable appear-ance to the city from without, and a finedisplay to the public buildings. Theprincipal of these are the cityhall, thecourthouse, marine-hospital, medical in-stitute, city-hospital, two savings-banks,four insurance-offices, two orphan asy-lums, four markets, a school for theblind, eighteen public schools, thirty se-lect schools, a Magdalen asylum, threehanks, and twenty-six churches. Thecity is lighted with gas, and expensiveworks are in construction to supply itwith good water. This being the prin-cipal place of business in the state, and,to a great extent, of the neighboringcountry, a very extensive trade centreshere ; and where an unknown numberof flatbottomed and keel-boats are con-stantly employed in the transportation ofgoods, about three hundred steamboatsare also in constant activity, running indifferent diiections, to and from the city.

4S4 DESCRIPTION OF THK STATE OF KENTUCKY. The s:rowth of Louisville has beenvery rapid. In 1800 the inhabitantsamounted to only 1,357; in 1830 theywere 10,196, and in 1846 about 30,000.Many kinds of manufactures are carriedon here. The canal, leading round thefalls, is one of the earliest and most im-portant works of improvement under-taken in this part of the country. Thecharier was granted in 1825, and thecanal was opened for use in 1829. Thestock was S600,000, of which congresstook S100,000. The canal is nearlythree miles in length, and in that dis-tance overcomes a descent of twenty-two and a half feet, by five locks. The Medical Institute at Louisville isa very important institution, founded in1837, with six professors, and about twohundred and fifty students. The lec-tures commence on the first Monday inNovember. The Kentucky Historical society hasa considerable library with numerousmanuscripts. The Merchants librarycontains 8,500 volumes.
