m which it is, for aconsideiable part of the distance, dividedby the ridge of the Southeast mountain.It extends south to the Potomac andwest to the Blue ridge. It is forty-twomiles long and eighteen miles in meanbreadth, and has an area of seven hun-dred and seventy-six square miles. Itis traversed by the Monocasy, whichlies wholly within it, excepting the head-waters. The Cotoctin mountain, a mi-nor branch of the Blue ridge, extendssouth, from the northwest part of thecounty, nearly to the Potomac, dividingthe valleys of the Monocasy and the Co-toctin. The surface is not generallyhilly, and in some parts level ; while thesoil is favorable to grain, grass, andfruit; and it is one of the best cultivatedparts of the state. Hagerstown.—This town stands onAntietam creek, and is seventy mileswest fom Baltimore, with daily stage-coaches to Frederick. It contains ninechurches, a townhall, two banks, twoacademies, and nearly four thousand in-habitants. It is the seat of justice of c/^f>.

276 DESCRIPTION OP THE STATE OF MARYLAND. Washington county, and a place of con-siderable importance, lying in the cen-tre of a rich limestone valley. Hancock, on the bank of Potomac riv-er, contains two churches, an academy,and about four hundred inhabitants. Cumberland, one hundred and sev-enty-eight miles west of Baltimore, ison the Potomac, at the mouth of Willscreek. It contains a bank, a market,five churches, a courthouse, and aboutone thousand inhabitants. The situa-tion is in a varied and wild region,among the mountains, where coalminesabound. The railroad to Baltimore af-fords daily communication with that cityand the intermediate places. It is theseat of justice of Allegany county, andthe eastern termination of the greatwestern road of the United States calledthe Cumberland Ioad.
