In 1810, the Pa-cific fur company, under John JacobAstor, of New York, was formed ; andin 1811 they founded Astoria, eightmiles from the mouth of the Columbia,as their principal trading post, and pro-ceeded to establish others in the inte-rior. A little later in the same year,the Northwest company sent a detach-ment to form establishments on the Co-lumbia; but when they arrived at themouth of the river they found the postoccupied. In consequence of the expo-sure of Astoria by the war of 1812, thepost was sold out to the Northwest com-pany. At the close of the war, Astoriawas restoied, by order of the Britishgovernment, to its oiiginal founders,agreeably to the first article of the treatyof Ghent. Various attempts have beenmade since the Wcft to renew the fur-trade in Oregon. In 1821, the Hud-sons bay and Northwest company, whohad previously been rivals, were united,and since that time have greatly extend-ed their establishment in the region ofOregon.

But by a treaty concluded atWashington, on the fifteenth of June,1846, this long-pending question, whichat one time seriously threatened tobreak the harmony existing between thetwo nations was put for ever at rest,by fixing the parallel of division be-tween the respective portions, as givenat the commencement of this description.There have been for some years sev-eral missionary stations at differentpoints in Oregon, and since the settle-m.ent of the question of boundary, newones have been established. Tt will be almost impossible to givean idea of the extensive fisheries in therivers, and on the coast.
