Bituminous coal abounds in some ofthe eastern parts of the state, and saltsprings and iron mines are also foundin several counties. There is usuallygood sleighing for several weeks, in thenorthern part of the state, along LakeErie. The winds are generally fromthe west and southwest. There were found no signs of Indiansettlements in the limits of the state,though an ancient trail, or Indian road,came down and crossed the Ohio river,at the mouth of the Licking, and led onthrough the Cumberland gap, being tliegrand route of travel through the vastwestern foiest, between the north andthe south. The preceding race, how-ever, of whom so little is known, hadleft very interesting traces on the verysite now occupied by Cincinnati, whichhave been obliterated. It was from 30 to 40feet wdde at the base, and had evidentlybeen much higher. A Iaised path ledfrom near the opening to the top of aflat mound, at some distance beyondMain street. A similar work, and asmall circular one, may also be enumer-ated ; but these were inferior to anotheroval, 760 feet by 40, lying nearly northand south, with a southern opening, be-yond which was a pit 50 feet \vide and12 feet in depth. At the corner ofFifth and Mound streets was a mound,35 feet high, and several smaller else-where, in some of which were foundpottery, various shells, &c. The mounds in Ohio form part of thelong chain which extends from the mid-dle of New York, southwesterly to theMississippi, and down its course, as issaid by some, to Mexico.
