The passages to the cells arethree feet wide, extending out from thewall in fiont of each cell. They beingconstructed in this manner, perfect si-lence can be preserved through thenight, as the slightest noise or whisperis heard by the watchman on guard be-low. This precaution is taken in orderto prevent any conversation during thenight. The same care is taken in thedaytime, for they are made to workwithout speaking. The prison-bell ringssoon after daybreak, which is a signalfor the prisoners to rise, and soon afterthe keeper unlocks the doors. Theprisoners then come out of their cells,each one taking his pan that is used forhis food, his kettle for water, and histub.
