ment. H O h K A M. This is the celebrated feat of the countef3 ©f Leicefter, andis fituated about two miles from ^Velles. It was built by thelate Earl of Leicefter, and is a moft noble manfion. It appearsthe moft magnificent when approached on the fouth-fide. Thefirft objects that prefent themfelves that way are a few fmallclumps of trees, which fketch out the way to the triumphalarch, under which the road runs. This ftructure is in a beauti-ful tafte, and finifhed in an elegant manner: it is extremelylight, and the white flint ruftics have a fine effect. A narrowplantation on each Frde a bread vifto, leads from hence to theobelifk, a mile and a half. At the bottom of the hill on whichthe obelifk ftands, are the two porters lodges, fmall, but veryneat ftructures. The houfe may be faid to confift of five quadrangles, the cen-ter, and the four wings: not that they are fquares, but the termis ufed to convey a general idea. Each of the two fronts prefcnta center and two wings. That on the fouth, and the grand ap-proach, is as beautiful, light, and elegant a building, as can beviewed. The portico is in a fine tafte, and the Corinthian pil-lars beautifully proportioned. This central front is diftinguifhedby lightnefs, elegance, and proportion.
