The placeis eloquent of him, and still possesses the atmos-phere of religious mysticism that, although it existedside by side with the constant clash of arms, yetin no wise yielded place. Assisi temper the gloom of the constant twilight lyingabout the tomb of the gentle Francis. Both in thelofty lancets of the upper church and the shortembrasures of the lower one is to be found a wealthof stained glass of the mosaic medallion type. Sorare is the product of this period in Italy that thisis the only place where enough examples exist toenable one satisfactorily to compare and study theschool. In the lower church we can inspect themat close range and, at our ease, puzzle out thestory of the little scenes told in morsels of glasslaboriously leaded together.
