BOWOOD. About a quarter of a mile from Calne,upon this road, on the right hand, is seenthe principal entrance to Bowood, from theLondon side. After we pass the gate, advancing to thehouse, we leave upon the right hand Pin-nells, which was formerly an ancient seatof the family of the Blakes. Bovvood was disparked in the time ofOliver Cromwell; and there is a traditionin the country, that the parliament com-missioners being embarrassed how to con-vey the deer from Bowood to Spye Park,across Lookshill Heath, which separatesthem, the people of the country made twowalls of broad cloth; which proves themanufacture to have been established inthose parts, even in that early period.
