. In the middle of the high-street is themarket-house; an ancient building, of sin-gular construction. Near to this, stands 26 SURVEY OF THE GREAT ROAD FROM St. Peters Church, the square round ofwhich, answers to the scite of a temple. A little to the south, is the gate, andsome other relicks, of a priory of whitefriars, founded in 1616. On the north, aresome other remains of a religious house,supposed by Gough to be St. MargaretsPriory of Gilbertines, founded by KingJohn. Marlborough is an ancient borough byprescription; has two parish churches, St.Peters, before mentioned, and St. Marys,which stands near the west end of thetown. It is now governed by a mayor, two jus-tices, twelve aldermen, two bailiffs, twenty-four burgesses, a town-clerk, and a serjeantat mace. Anciently, the freemen, on their admis-sion, presented to the mayor, two grey-hounds, two white capons, and a white bull;to which gift the arms of the corporationbear an allusion. A sum of money is nowgiven in lieu thereof.

LONDON TO BATH AND BRISTOL. 27 There being little trade or manufacturescarried on here, the town is chiefly sup-ported by the advantage of being a greatthoroughfare on the high western road, andby its market, which is well supplied withcorn and cheese of excellent quality. Marlborough gave title to James Ley,Lord High Treasurer of England, created1, Charles I. He was succeeded by his sonand grandson; which last was slain in a na-val engagement against the Dutch in 1665,and leaving no issue, it then devolved tohis uncle, William, who also died withoutissue. In the year 1689, Lord John Churchillw7as advanced by King William and QueenMary, to the dignity of Earl of Marlbo-rough; and by Queen Anne, to that ofMarquis of Blandford, and Duke of Marl-borough.
