ay to which, at a little dis-tance to the right, was Studley Abbey, for-merly a monastery of Cistercian monks:it is now a farm-house, part of an estateextending to Chippenham, belonging toSir Edward Bayntun, Baronet ; who re-moved the gateway of the abbey, whichwas given by Queen Mary, to Spye Park;where it forms the entrance from Bath bythe Sandy-Lane road. 62 SURVEY OF THE GREAT ROAD FROM SECT. V. CHIPPENHAM. Chippenham is a large market-town,ninety-three miles from London, pleasantlysituated on the banks of the Avon. It ispopulous and well built. The church is anelegant structure, said to have been erectedby some of the Hungerford family, whosearms are to be seen on various parts thereof. This was the seat of several of the Saxonkings, and bequeathed by Alfred to one ofhis daughters. The Danes fled twice, from the victoriousarms of Alfred, to this place, where theycommitted great ravages; but gave it upto him in the year 879. The town is divided by the Avon, overwhich stands a low bridge of sixteen arches.—Here are some manufactures of woollencloth; which, together with the market,are its chief support.—Dr. Scott, the au-thor of that incomparable work, his Chris-tian Life, was born here. DRAICOT HOUSE. About three miles and a half from Chip-penham, near to the Oxford road, is Drai-cot House, the seat of Sir J. T. Long, Ba-ronet.
