The United States Coast Survey, under the superintendence ofProf. A. D. Bache, displays some fine illustrations of these pruici-ples, and of the modifications they may undergo to suit variouslocalities. The figure on the opposite page represents part of thescheme of the primary triangulation resting on the Massa-chusetts base and including some remarkably well-conditionedtriangles, as well as the system of quadrilaterals which is a valuablefeature of the scheme when the sides of the triangles are extendedto considerable lengths, and quadrilaterals, with both diagonalsdetermined, take the place of simple triangles. Three or four timbers framed into a Fig- 259. pyramid, as in the figure, with a long mastprojecting above, fulfil the first and lastconditions. The mast may be made verti-cal by directing two theodolites to it and ad-justing it so that their telescopes follow itup and down, their lines of sight being atright angles to each other. Guy ropesmay be used to keep it vertical. A very excellent signal, used on the Massachusetts State Survey,by Mr. Borden, is represented in the three following figures. It
