ce nothing but a tragedy could have prevented its be-ing a farce. The matter was adjusted by the publicationof a statement that while Mr. Lincoln was the author ofthe article signed Rebecca, he had no intention of injur-ing the personal or private character or standing of Mr.Shields as a gentleman or man, and that he did notthink that the article could produce such an effect, andhad Mr. Lincoln anticipated such an effect he wouldhave forborne to write it. Thus this serio-comic affairpassed with little result save to emphasize the vanityand sensitiveness of Gen. Shields, and the cleverness andcandor of Mr. Lincoln. Mr. Lincoln carried out his engagement with MaryTodd, and was married to her in November, 1842, withforebodings that did not promise well for a happy marriedlife. Possibly, as Mr. Lincoln feared, they were not alto-gether fitted for each other. He was not able at this time to provide a home of hisown, but took up his residence at the Globe Tavern inSpringfield at an expense of four dollars a week for boardand lodging for himself and wife. Mr. Lincoln had beenlicensed as an attorney in 1837, an<^ nac^ removed toSpringfield when that city became the capital of the state.Among the men who were his compeers, some of whomafterwards attained prominence, were Stephen T. Logan,Stephen A. Douglas, E. D. Baker, John T.Stuart, NinianW. Edwards, Jesse B. Thomas, and others of local re-nown. Mr. Lincolns reputation, thus far, has been as a poli-tician in Sangamon Co. Politics will continue to havethe chief fascination for his mind, but law will be hisprofession and his means of livelihood. He found hisfirst law partner in his friend John T.
