Text Appearing Before Image:
erected a platform, onit built a box-like frame of poles and over this stretched thickwalrus hides, ingeniously laced and padded. A small holein the top, covered with transparent walrus-gut, forms thewindow. The door or only entrance is a hole, two feet square, through which he crawls. This box-like dwelling is sur-rounded on two or three sides by a shed, or storm porch, actingas storeroom and wind-break. For two months in the summer, he leaves his rocky aerieand has a vacation on the mainland, gathering berries, catch-ing salmon and trading his polar bearskins and ivory crib-bage-boards for a few sacks of flour. Then he returns to hisisland home for another ten months of isolation. Often hehas to wait for weeks to cross the sea in safety and be ableto make a landing. Yet he clings to his mid-ocean rock-pilewith as fervent a love as the Swiss to his Alps. Natures lawperforce has made the Kings Island Eskimo the most skillfulboatman and daring hunter of his race. Publishers Department. mi refusing even to shelter him on their forbidding breasts, havecompelled him to live in mid-air and wrest his living from thesea. On rough days when someone has to get out, it is donein this manner: an Eskimo takes his seat in the kyack, tieshis hooded waterproof parka over the opening, then four mengrab him, kyack and all, and throw him from the face of acliff, into the breakers. With consummate skill he makeshis way out, perhaps to the lee of the island, where he huntstill the storm is over, then returns to the village, laden withseal and birds. t .. A „..,... I < KQ When the gigantic icefloes are hurled by the polar cur-rent with Titanic force against his little island, threatening tobrush it away like chaff before the wind,he recks it not, butsturdily treads the floes in semi-darkness, stalking the seaand walrus and grappling with the polar bear.—Captain F. E.■Kleinschmidt, in Pacific Mo)ithly. It would be interesting to know if there are any tube
