to FortNiagara, in New York. They then attacked Fort Niagara,captured it, and laid six of the adjacent towns, including Buffalo,in ashes. Meanwhile, the Creek Indians, in the South, rose inarms and destroyed Fort Mimms in Alabama, massacring some400 women and children. General Jackson led a force againstthem, and forced them into a humiliating peace at the battle ofTohopeka, March, 1814. During 1813 the ocean was the scene of many desperateengagements. The American sloop Hornet, Captain Lawrence,captured the British brig Peacock, Feb. 24. Captain Lawrencewas given charge of the Chesapeake, in wWch he was defeatedand killed, by the British frigate Shannon, off Boston Harbor,June I. The American brig Argus, Captain Allen, capturedmany British vessels, off the English coast, but was herselfcaptured by the Pelican, Aug. 14. On Sept. 5 the Americanbrig Enterprise captured the Boxer, off the coast of Maine.The commanders of both vessels were killed, and were buriedin one grave in Portland.

During the summer of 1813 a British squadron, under AdmiralCockburn, plundered and burned Lewistown on the DelawareBay, and Havre de Grace, Frenchtown, Frederickstown, andGeorgetown on the Chesapeake. He was repulsed in his attackson Norfolk and Portsmouth, but committed great depredationsat Hampton. EVENTS OF 1814.—On May 5 the British attacked andcaptured Oswego, N. Y., but left it in two days. On July 3Generals Scott and Ripley crossed to the Canada side and cap-tured Fort Erie from the British. Brown then marched westalong the Niagara river, and on July 5 gained the briiliant vic-tory of Chippewa, over the British general Riall. GeneralDrummond now came to the rescue of Riall, and Scott rein-forced Brown. The opposing armies fought the bloody battleof Lundys Lane, near Niagara Falls, July 25. The losses wereheavy on both sides, the result indecisive, both Brown andScott being wounded, and the Americans fell back to Fort Erie.Drummond besieged
