es toward getting excellent work out of locomotives. It is an unpardonable sin to have a train delayed by a loco-motive failure. this remark was made in answer to a ques-tion which the writer has asked pretty generally all over Eu-rope. It wras made by the general manager of an English road.His standing in motive power matters is secured by over tenyears as locomotive superintendent of the road and by the factthat he had the American Engineer in bound volumes in hisbook case and the latest issue was open upon his desk, whenthe writer called. He has read this journal for many yearsand several years ago was invited to preside over the entireoperation of the road. (Let the young reader at home takespecial note of this ) He said, We cannot afford to have loco-motive failures, for they would tie us up tight as a drum.This is a fact.
