D. factor (tractive effort multiplied by diameter ofdrivers divided by total heating surface) and comparing it withlocomotives designed for use on roads in the same vicinity, andof about the same size, it will be found that when allowance ismade for the effect of the size of drivers on the tractive effortit represents about the average of what is considered good prac-tice for that region. The 22 by 28 in. Pacific type on the Bur-lington with 74 in. drivers has a B. D. factor of 605. A 23 by 28in. on the Alton, with 80 in. drivers, gives 618. A 23 by 28 in.with 75 inch wheels on the Northwestern has a factor of 548.A balanced compound on the Northern Pacific with 220 lbs.pressure, 69 in. wheels, gives a factor of 720, and the same ratiofor the locomotive built about five years ago, mentioned above,is about 690. AMERICAN ENGINEER AND RAILROAD JOURNAL. 451 A radial stayed conical type boiler is employed very similar tothe design used on the same type locomotive in use on theNorthern Pacific Railway.* The principal difference is in thelength of the flues, which in this case are 19 ft. in place of 16 ft.9 in. A liberal depth of throat is provided, the bottom of themud ring being 255/2 in. below the barrel. The side water legsare 4 in. in width and the inside firebox sheet is vertical, whilethe outside sheet has a decided inclination outward, the widthof the water leg at the turn of the crown being 6)i in. Thecombustion chamber is stayed by staybolts instead of plates andthe firebox has four 3 in. arch tubes. Reference to the illustration showing the general elevationand cross section will make clear all other features of the de-sign and the general dimensions are given in the table at theend of the article.
