Text Appearing Before Image:
feet wide on either sideof the door at the bottom of the partition for pigeons to feedthrough, this slatted section will naturally not be full 3 feetwide on account of the space taken up by the 2x4 upright, theslats should be 18 inches long and one and one-half incheswide, not over one-half inch thick and placed one and one-halfinches apart. Ordinarily lath will do if lattice or other materialcannot be secured. The wire on the aisle partition should be put on in two strips6 feet and 2 feet wide respectively and long enough to go tofull combined width of the nest rooms. To nail the wire onstretch it the full length of the aisle, across the door openingand all. Set in the door frames and nail the wire on the 2x4uprights that form the door casings and to the door frames, thencut the wires between the door frame and the door casing, hang the door with hinges so it will swing out into the aisle, nail a strip on the door casing for a stop to keep the door from Construction of squab houses 209
Text Appearing After Image:
210 AMERICAN SQUAB CULTURE swinging into the nest room, attach a screen door coil spring tothe door and the casing to pull and hold the door shut. I neglected to state that there must be a 2x4 two feet longnailed in at the top of each door to complete the door frameand a 2x4 about 2 feet 6 inches long nailed horizontally 17 inchesabove the floor to nail the Slats on to. There should also bea one inch thick strip nailed on the floor on either side of thedoor for the same purpose. SQUAB HOUSES FOR SMALL PLANTS A squab house for a small plant can be arranged at a smallexpense and a small temporary place will produce fairly goodresults. I recommend the double nest system, however, evenif there are only two pairs to be provided for. A corner in a barnloft, chicken house, garage, or most any outbuilding can bepartitioned off with wood or wire and converted into a nest roomwith little expense. It is advisable, ho\vever, to have the birdswhere they will get some light, fresh air and not too h
