ogressed far when another set ofabout the same number filed into the plaza from theother end of the pueblo and went through the sameperformance. We spent the remainder of the day taking photo-graphs of the place and of some of the people, and inwalking to an old butte, where, it is claimed, thepueblo was originally situated; but like the old cliffdwellings, the former homes of the Pueblo Indians,the place was deserted. It could be seen, however,from arrowheads and old pieces of pottery foundthere, that at some remote period, during the prehis-toric ages, the place must have been inhabited. During the evening we had several callers, amongwhom was a young Indian of good type, wdio couldspeak English as well as vSpanish and his nativeIndian language. It is a curious fact that the lan-guage spoken in pueblos situated within a short dis-tance of each other differs, while sometimes in two,many miles apart, the same is spoken. Being in doubt as towhether the pueblos we intended visiting had Eng-lish-speaking Indians, we decided to take, as inter-preter, Juan, the young Indian, who seemed de-lighted with the idea of making a third to our party.He told us he had made several trips to the differentptieblos and had at one time spent a year among theUtes, whose customs he still followed. His longblack hair was parted in Ute style, and on specialoccasions he used quite a quantity of war paint. Hewas unmarried, but told us he expected to take theall-important step at harvest time, when he wouldhave saved five dollars, the amount necessary to paythe Mexican priest to perform the ceremony. Theprospect of earning the five dollars and winning themaid before harvest time probably made the partingwith her less hard.
