neededonly a ladys thimble for a flower-pot, and a whitechickweed. Dotting the few feet of green aroundme were seen the yellow blossoms of the more hardypoppy, the purple polentilla^ and the white, purple,and yellow saxifrages. This little oasis was literally imbedded in ice.The water which had flowed through it had frozenin the holes, and spread itself out in a crystal sheetupon the rocks and stones around. McGary and Bonsall, with fivemen, were dispatched with a sledge-load of stores,part of which they were to place on the land, as farnorth as they could reach, the remainder at availablepoints along the Greenland coast. These depositswere to serve as supports of the principal opera-tions, which were to follow in the spring. Theparty carried upon the sledge, in addition to theirown provisions and equipment, about four hundredpounds of pemmican* and bread. Their route lay up the hitherto unsurveyed coastof Greenland, to the northeastward from RensselaerHarbor.
