ed, and our search wasmost diligent. The animals being purely white,with only a few black hairs on the tips of theirears, could not be easily detected. They frequentthe rocky places where they find shelter, and comedown to the plain to feed on grass, moss, aad lichen,which they dig up from beneath the snow. Wehunted around and around the rocks at the baseof the cliffs, where it seemed most probable thathares would be found, but to no purpose ; we couldnever start one. The foxes (both the blue and whitevarieties) were repeatedly seen ; but they were verytimid, and could not be approached within a shorterrange than two or three hundred yards. On oneoccasioa Mr. Bonsall and myself had a tedious runfor fully three hours after one, without success.Each of us had a gun, and we tried every art andstratagem. The little fellow was seen one momentfar up the hill-side, seated upon a rock; and beingthence pursued, he would leap down, and clamber-ing around the face of the hill, would be next seen
