stances the gothic-formed sarcophagi werecarved ont of the protruding peaks of the rock ; theheavy top alone added to form the sepulchre. In my former rambles in Asia Minor I observed thateach district had a peculiarity in the architecture ofits tombs, and that none was more distinctly markedthan that of the ancient Lycia. The four kinds oftombs represented in the annexed Plate, I have found,are peculiar to Lycia, and may serve in part as tests ofthe extent of that country. I shall call these the Obe-lisk, the Gothic, and the Elizabethan forms ; the firstfrom its appearance, and the latter as strongly resem-bling the architectural styles so named. With theseforms I have generally found the Lycian languageconnected, and two or more of them appear in everyancient city found in that district*. This range must have beenthe one down whose beautiful valleys we had for somehours been travelling. Calynda, if this was the site ofthe city, was high up in the mountains, but not far fromthe sea, where it probably had its port, as we knowthat it supplied ships to the fleet of Xerxes. Fromthe situation and remains of the city, I conclude thatit cannot have been very large, but, from its remainingtombs, it may have existed for many generations, andprobably at an early period.
