of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries,had remained virtually unchanged during the pro-gress of the decorated style. In France these principles were never abandoned,and they continued in that country, to the very endof the style, unchanged. The english architects,however, had thrown themselves into the problemof vaulting with a thoroughness which the frenchbuilders never attained. One, comparatively small, difference between themethods of the two nations is significant of thesuperior grasp which our own architects had got ofthe real heart of the matter. Given vault-ribs, ourarchitects saw that the practically best mode ofconstructing the stone vaults, lying between the ribs,was to place the beds of the filling-in at right anglesto a centre line drawn equi-distant from each ofthe diverging ribs. By this means the weight ofthe stone spandrils was made to bear equally uponeach of the ribs. At this obvious improvement the French never,to the latest period of gothic architecture, arrived.
