Text Appearing Before Image:
City of Gorgeana. example worthy of imitation, by rebuildingthe bank-wall at the northerly corner, wherelies all that is mortal of Judge Sewall andfamily; and has set upright all the recliningand prostrate grave-stones, and trimmed thewild and superfluous shrubbery. Anotherindividual who left York and returned undersimilar circumstances has also rebuilt a por-tion of the wall. While this is deserving ofall praise on the part of these gentlemen, and improves the appearance of the placewhere the noble pioneers rest, and whichshould be protected for all time, the improve-ment must be received with an ill-grace bythose who, by the ties of nature, are morallybound to do what others have done. It is tobe hoped that the new cemetery, in rear ofthe Town-house, will never be so neglected asthis has been, and that those who continue tolive in the vicinity will possess public spiritsufficient to keep it in repair A recent en-largement has been made, and laid out intolots with perfect rcgidarity.
Text Appearing After Image:
182 Ancient €ity of Gorgeana. BARTHOLOMEW, BETSY, AND EUTH AVITHAM THE OLD SARGEXT HOUSE. Doubtless many now living in York mayremember Bartholomew Witham, commonlycalled in those days by not only the boys, butevery one else, Uncle Bart, who had servedin the war of the Revolution, and, accordingto liis own stories, was himself a favorite ofGeneral George Washington, of whom andof his own exploits he never tired of telling, especially if a little merry. He had a goodapple tree, and used to give his favorites anoccasional taste of the fruit. An incident inhis life may be worth mentioning. One darknight, -while on his way home from what wascalled the store, near the Judge Sewallhouse, a little the worse for liquor, and find-ing the road very crooked, he espied in theair the fiery eyes and glowing mouth ofsomething Mhich seemed to be approachingclose to a point which he had to pass. He Moifern Toifn of York. 183 thought the Devil had surely come for him ; and nisliinn to the ue :re>jt
