F.Ewers of Davenport, as photographer, and my son Charles. We climbed first to the top of Lone Grave Bluff, thehighest and most abrupt point on the Misisssippi at Lyonsoverlooking what is known as the Narrows, and upon whichthe western end of the proposed suspension bridge was tohave rested. After enjoying the magnificent outlook for atime, and securing views of this point, and of Fulton Bluffopposite, on which was to have rested the eastern end of thebridge, we started westward from the top of Lone Grave Bluff.A¥e journeyed along at grade, through cut and across filluntil we reached the Big Cut some three miles from theriver, in the ravine beyond which, in 1854, a large culvertwas built of handsome cream-colored stone, but of which cul-vert now not a stone remains. The panic of 1857 made funds scarce,but that did not deter the faithful. Material was at handin the abandoned culvert, and energetic hands soon had itmetamorphosed from a burden bearer into a temple whereinmen should learn to obey the command: Bear ye one anothersburdens. This was the first church erected in Lyons. It isstill in use and in good repair. We took a photograph of theculvert site, and on our way home secured a good pictureof the church.
