as the aggregate includes 723 periodicals, 1,409annuals and similar publications, and 743 individual books.These records are for the present on cards in the division,but it is hoped at an early date to publish check lists of theforeign documents of the countries which are well repre-sented in the Library of Congress. The works in the custody of the division which have notyet been catalogued, and whose location is not, therefore,indicated by a card number, have been arranged by countriesand by subjects. To the facilities of the division for researchshould be added the printed indexes already referred to.These embrace the general and special indexes of the UnitedStates documents, and of the British parliamentary papers,and are supplemented by a collection of catalogues fromofficial libraries, both in the United States and foreign coun-tries, from which considerable aid is derived in tracingdocumentary publications. Inquirers will be freely admitted to the shelves where theneed requires.

Manuscript Division, 261 DIVISION OF MANUSCRIPTS. (Room I 3 and, for repair work, a portion of K 3.) Fourpersons; also two repairers from the Government PrintingOffice. Charles Henry Iyincoln, assistant in charge. Created by the appropriation act effective July 1, 1897. Hours from 9 a. m. till 4 p. m. Has the custody of allthe manuscript material in the Library not classifiable asmap, music, or print (the latter designation including allcontributions to the graphic arts). This numbers nowsome 36,000 pieces, which could be compacted into perhaps1,500 volumes. Its contents are analyzed in pages 335-344of this Report. The duty of the division with reference to this material,as of the documents, maps, music, and prints divisions withreference to the material in the custody, respectively, ofeach, is not merely to safeguard it, but to aid in the acqui-sition, to classify and catalogue, to make it useful toreaders, and to answer inquiries which relate to it or whichmay be answered effectivel
