GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF THE TERRITORIES. 41 1. 2. 3. 4. 6. 8. Dark-brown shaly clay, with thin geodes ofcalcspar. The whole 500 feet. A bed of broken vsandstone, fine-grained, freqnently ris- ing above the surface. 4 feet. Dark slaty shale. 30 feet. A somber brown qnartzose sandstone projecting np on the side of the mountain like a wall. 50 to 80 feet. Dark-brown shale, with three layers of sandstone, 4 to 10 feet thick. Toward the sum- mit of the hill or mountain, . which is 700 to 1,200 feet above the i)ase, the sand- stones project up with very rugged, irregular edges. The rock is very compact, chalkv, fracturing easily. 300 feet. A rusty-brown mud-quartzite. Inclination, 75^. 100 feet. Interval of softer brown mud- shale. 500 feet. Brown sandstone, rising np in a high wall 100 feet. Be- low it are some thin beds of sandstone, one of which, 2 feet thick, is made up of small pebbles, cemented with sand. 30feet; dip, 80^. 9. Interval of brown, arenaceous, shaly, laminated sandstone. 10. High wall of brown sandstone, with huge, concretions, ir- regular bedding, with fine illustrations of wave-mark- ings. 20 feet. 11. Low interval of soft material, black shale or slate. 300 feet. 12. High wall of rusty-brown qnartzite, so hard and brit- tle and broken by jointage as to appear metamorphic. 20 feet; dip, 70°. 13. Three or four thin beds of quartzite, ragged edges standing up 5 to 30 feet above the surface, with sotter clays intervening. 100 feet. 14. Grassy interval,probably slaty clay. 75 feet. layers of brown sandstone. With gradually passing to a slaty shale.
